Good productivity despite some disease problems
Had a good couple of days haul from the garden. Pictured are Crnkovic Yugoslavian, Stupice, Matina, Abe Lincoln, Barlow Jap, Carbon, Indian Stripe, Sungold, Matt's Wild Cherry, BHN640, Red Siberian, Park's Whopper & Spudakee. My plants started out great (like they do every year) but we had an extended period of wet weather and my normal summer disease has set in on some of my plants. That is part of the reason I am growing some hybrids this year. Hopefully we will continue the warm dry pattern for a while! Excited about some BLT's for dinner! Happy growing!!

He wont' be disappointed in Barlow Jap! I grew them last year and regretful that I didn't again this year. My avatar image here is a photo of my first ripe Barlow Jap from last year. With all of the rain and now heat, most of my pink varieties have one or no fruit but my two red beefsteaks, RED BARN variety, seem to be setting fruit decently with this crazy weather.

Talking about setting fruit, my Sarah black tomato has 23 good size tomatoes. Last year Sarah black did not survived to give me any tomatoes (cat got into the opening of the tomato bed and did its do-do, killing my Sarah black). The truth to be told, the plant I had last year was PL, and Sarah is RL. I was offered by one of the t-villians, Mark0820 (thank you), seeds of RL Sarah. It is a beautiful healthy and very productive. Just have to be patient to get the first ripe tomato.

Great photo
Quick question; how does your Matina compare to Stupice in taste? How did it yield for you, and was it as early?

AKMark,
Matina and Stupice have been almost identical in taste and production this year and both were early with Stupice being the earliest of the two. In years past Matina seems to have been the winner but they are neck and neck all the way around in 2013. They aren't going to win many flavor contests against the biggies like Brandywine or the like but they are definitely flavorful and productive and make it back into my garden every year! Mark |

Efisakov,
Barlow Jap is a large pink tomato that tastes surprisingly like my favorite pink Brandywines, although most years it ripens a little sooner. Like Pink Brandywines, it has thin skin and small core. They usually run around a pound and have been one of my favorite slicers for quite a few years now. Give them a try, they'll probably become one of your favorites, also. Enjoy! Camo |

Yes, Barlow Jap was the first to ripen in my garden too last year. I forgot to mention the one pink tomato that is setting fruit for me with this extreme weather, and maybe because it's a smaller sized fruit, is Eva Purple Ball. About 20 fruit compared to 1 or none on my Earl's Faux and Terhune. At least I'll have something pink.

What a beautiful sight! I hope your weather continues to improve so that you can enjoy all those varieties throughout the summer. I think you'll enjoy Barlow Jap, too- this is the 3rd year in a row it's found a spot in my garden. Happy tasting!
