Earl's Faux vs Missouri Pink Love Apple
I did a side-by-side trial of Earl's Faux and Missouri Pink Love Apple, this year. I found them to be indistinguishable.

Are you talking about vine, leaf, fruit size, shape, flavor, yield, fruit color or all of the above?
Did you happen to grow Brandywine same time? |

Never grew MO Pink Love Apple but Earl's Faux is one of my TOP 3 for flavor! Interesting comparison you did there.... may have to try MPLA.
Thanks for the info! LarryD

Travis,
You forgot cracking, which also was similar. My answer to your question is... all of the above, especially flavor. Earl's Faux and Missouri Pink Love Apple were indistiguishable, in taste, to each other, but different to all of the other varieties in my garden. I've trialed EF side-by-side with Brandywine (Sudduth). They taste different, and Brandywine's fruit can double the size of EF. I must add that this year I've extremely limited the watering. Next year, I may try another side-by side with much more water. Gary |

Very interesting. I didn't have a lot of trouble with cracking on Earl's Faux or Brandywine, but they were nearly indistinguishable with regard to size, color, flavor and days to full ripe tomatoes. I'll have to give Missouri Love Apple a shot next year. Thanks for bringing it up.

Travis,
They both had very light cracking, outward from the stem, about 3/4 " long. Almost all of my other varieties have had much more cracking than that. Gary |

Out of all the tomatoes mentioned here I only grew EF and noticed no cracking (yet) it was the one of the more impressive tomatoes in my garden. The flavor didn't disappoint either. I will try this Missouri Pink Love Apple next year will be interesting to compare and if it's so similar to EF then I'll not be out anything for trying. Still, it would have been nice to see pictures to go along with the claim.

I've grown both for several years. Seed for EF came from N. Kirsch in 2005. Seed for MPLA came from Baker Creek in 2004.
I do not find the flavor similar at all. MPLA is bland. Bland. Earl's Faux is consistently absolutely delicious, year after year. Brandywine Sudduth and Cowlick are other tomatoes with similar complex, dead-on tomato flavor. MPLA produced well for me, as does EF. The fruits of MPLA were quite distinguishable from EF, with MPLA being a more pastel-ly pink than EF. Shape-wise, MPLA was more globe-shaped than EF. MPLA was a bit more productive than EF, though EF has always been pretty good in that respect for me. I will have to go back through my photos to see if I have comparison shots. Doubt I do. I didn't grow MPLA this year and don't plan to again.

Ruth,
So now the question is, do either of us have the genuine Missouri Pink Love Apple? My source is from a friend, of a friend, of a ... At least I know I have the genuine EF, straight from Earl C. Gary |
