My Tomato Plants as Of 06/06/13

Hello everyone,

Here are my eighteen plants thus far.

I planted them in ground as of 05/06.

The strains are as follows;

Church
Delicious
Brutus Magnum
Brutus Magnum Yellow
Mega Marv
And my own Big Zac from seeds taken from my personal best of 2.86 lbs last season.

The photo's show the plants prior to me pruning all to two stems only in order to focus plant energy towards Fruit growth.

I am not growing for consumption, only for size so the methods I'm employing are somewhat different than growers that wish quantity.

I have a couple of fused blossoms at this time on a couple of different plants so I'm leaving those and removing single blooms.

The ultimate goal is to have a multiple fused blossom producing a tomato that will hopefully grow to a heavy weight, all other tomatoes are removed from the plant or not allowed to grow to begin with.

I'll keep everyone updated as to how my season is going.

Shall we root for mutants?

Julia your plants look great; but what are you going to use to support them? With only two stems they are going to get really tall fast. The way you have them planted would be perfect for the conduit trellis system I use. It is constructed of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch metal conduit and held together with zip ties. It is very sturdy and can support really heavy plants and it allows plants with just a couple of stems the room to run along the horizontal bars. Below are some pictures of it from various angles.

Your trellis system looks great!!

I have 8 foot 2 X 2 stakes That I am putting in within a couple of days.

These will be reenforced with two 3 foot wooden stakes screwed to the main stake.

In order to have the plants concentrate their energy towards the growth of giant specimens, all plants will be topped at 6 feet.

Any additional growth past that mark has been shown to adversely affect size of tomatoes due to the plant focusing energy and nutrients in growth that is superfluous.
