Default What's your favorite cherry/grape type?

This season, I'm focusing on growing out as many different open-pollinated cherry/grape/currant types as possible. My questions to you are - what is/are your favorite OP variety/varieties, why are they your favorite(s) - and are you planning on growing any this year?

Hybrids are ok to mention too, but since I can't save seeds for them I'm not growing any, except for a couple of F2 segregating types for a good friend of mine.

I'd also appreciate it if you post where you originally obtained your seeds.

I grew Green Grape from SSE, last season. Germination, and growth were great, the fruit Tasted like buttery tomato cream i enjoyed them, but my knowledge and taste are still growing.
I did not like my gold rush currant but it grew well, pretty compact.

I've grown the following but I can't say that I would consider either a fave. Still searching for a stand out cherry variety to me.

Black Cherry - Casey's Heirloom Seeds
Sungold f1 hybrid - Thompson & Morgan

I will be growing the following this season.

Honeydrop - Secret Seed Cartel
Isis Candy - Delectation of Tomatoes
Sweet Linda - Heritage Tomato Seeds
Carbon Copy - Ron from Tomatoville
Jasper f1 hybrid - AAS winner from Johnny's Seeds

Lat year I grew

Black Cherry Fedco
Coyote Sandhill
Grape Tradewind Fruit
Yellow Current Gourmet International Seeds
Red Currant Totally Tomatoes
Yellow Pear Ebay

I grew others but between heat weeds and the fact that I depended on a map to know what was what and I found it impossible to figure out which was which with weeds and tomatoes all mixed together I can't comment about them.

I didn't like the grape from Trade wind Fruits. It was like a poor store bought grape. In fact I just ate some store bought grapes tomatoes tonight that tasted much better.

The yellow pear had a tough skin, mediocre flavor and a "weird" texture, but it looked so good I'll grow it again. The other 4 were all good. It's hard to describe taste but I'd say they were sweet with undertones of a fruitiness and a complexity to the flavor.

Sungold - sweet like candy
Matt's Wild Cherry - intense flavor for such tiny fruit
Snow White - I like the tartness

For me, Matt's Wild Cherry has been delicious, very easy to grow (if you don't mind gangly) and with seeds that stay viable for many years (and are inclined to self-sow).

I've heard that Sara's Galapagos is along the same vein but maybe tastier, so I'll be trying those this year.

Tommy Toe is tasty and productive, and with larger fruit, but the flavor was just very good, not delectable.

Blondkopfchen is the epitome of prolific (and aggressive-growing) but I found the flavor unpredictable in my seed. Only some were both sweet and tart.

Here's what I wrote about the 2010 Franchi cherries I grew the last two years that i included in my SASE offer. This year I'm trying Casino Chips because they sound like they will be a lot like the Franchi ones. If you want some seeds, I still have plenty! Let me know.

I bought these from Seeds of Italy back in 2010 when they were a new product and the former owner (who lived only a few towns away) gave them a great review after trialing them. Beyond "red cherry" there was no variety name attached to them. However, they don't match the description of the Franchi Red Cherry currently available, so obviously the company changed cherry varieties along the way!

I have grown them the past two years, and what I got was a tomato that was probably ping-pong ball sized or slightly larger, with a traditional cherry shape--rounder in the middle with a flatter bottom. The plant gets quite large and it actually toppled the cage I had it in last year! The current Franchi Red Cherry offering is described as a very compact plant with oblong fruit.

It really pumps out the fruit once it gets going, and I'd probably classify it as a midseason tomato up here in the northeast, that continues producing right on through to fall. The current offering is listed as early.

And unlike Franchi's newer red cherry, I wouldn't describe them as sweet, either. These have a bit of bite to them, with more of what I'd call "big" tomato taste, which is what I prefer. Other than fresh eating, my favorite use for them was to make a bruschetta topping using olive oil, garlic, basil and salt. These have enough flavor to really stand up to the garlic and basil!

I've always grown supersweet 100 and they've done exceptionally well. This is my first year growing OP tomatoes, so maybe I don't know what I've been missing. This years cherry tomato will be "black cherry" . Im considering grafting them on Supersweet100 roots though. Can anyone comment on Black Cherry's vigor and disease resistance?

I grew Cherry Roma last year, and thought it had very good flavor. It's a grape-cherry type.

I'm a newly-minted fan of Rose Quartz (especially the multiflora strain--the blossom trusses are so pretty!). It has been very sweet and productive for me, giving Sungold a run for it's money as family favorite this year. I still have a plant churning out a bowl full of extremely sweet small pink cherries every few days, as it has been since late November, so it's definitely going on my grow list again next year. My source was Heritage for the multiflora version. The regular version I believe came from Gleckler.

I'm growing quite a few new to me cherries this year. I ususally seed Cherry Roma but give them away to a friend who loves them. This year I will keep at least one plant. I also have Green Grape started, Reisentraube, Big Sungold Select. Still to start Casino chips, Carbon Copy, the Porter Charles Herring, and I will likety try to fit in a Snow White and Matts Wild Cherry too.

My favorite cherries right now are Blush from Seeds of Change, loved it and they are gorgeous, Tommy Toe from a seed train at Idigmygarden a couple of years ago, and Black Cherry. The Black Cherry came from eBay and was sluggish so I'm changing sources this year to one I received from the tomato and pepper exchange here a few months ago.

This year I have started Black Cherry, Blush, Anna Aasa, Remy Rouge, and nine volunteer cherry crosses.
