And watch out for ersatz farmer's markets like Canino's, 95% of whose produce has UPC stickers on them and comes out of boxes straight from California.
True, but they have some of the best taco trucks in the city.

Grow many things that are not round and smooth, like Feldon said. Make sure you have a decent sampling of non-reds --blacks are still trendy, as are purples. But make sure as well you have at least one "smooth and round and red" just to reassure everyone. I'd say Atkinson because it grows like gangbusters around here and has insanely good taste. If your 'maters taste good, folks will come back for more.

If you are in the Greater Houston area, may I suggest the Houston Community College (NW) Horticulture Club's Annual Spring Vegetable Sale (date TBA)? It will have a wide variety of heirlooms at quite reasonable prices (for transplants). The proceeds benefit the Horticulture Club, and I can PERSONALLY vouch that the seeds came from noble Tomatovillians of pure thought and upright purpose (cuz I begged/borrowed/cajoled them from several other folks last year, LOL).

  • March 8th - my typical date to put plants in
  • May 5th - first harvest
  • mid-June - harvest really starts to decline
  • mid-July - plants are dead
That's a 130 day season.
feldon, you hit the nail on the head............
I put out my first plant yesterday (march 1st) and will continue to plant for
the next week or so.
the last good summer grow season I had here up in the College Station area
was when Hurricane Ike came thru. I had to pull plants up in Sept so I would
have a burn pile for lost trees and branches.
Last spring the wind was so bad I didnt even start on maters and with the
drought we had Im glad I gave the garden a rest for a year!
