Sungold OP substitute?
What OP cherry tomato variety comes closest to Sungold in taste and production? Ami

If you go to www.mariseeds.com and look in the cherry section, there is a listing there for one called "Orange Cherry." She says she believes this is the OP version of Sungold, but I have not grown it myself so I wouldn't swear to it. Has anyone grown both and compared?

Gold Nugget is OP, isn't it? Trouble is, there're so few seeds in each one, I don't bother to save 'em, just go buy 'em when my stash runs low.
Sungold and Gold Nugget are very similar; I'll bet Sungold has a Gold Nugget parent in its lineage. J

Ami, have you grown Reinhard Kraft's Sungold Select and Sungold Select II? Both are OP.

Ami,
From my understanding from Craig and others, R.Kraft has invested alot of time into de-hybridizing Sun Gold F1. I have all of them I'm pretty sure. There is even a Red SG Select. Craig knows alot about it. But I think he told me that the Sun Gold Select II is the closest to the original.

And I was just about to place an order for Sungold F1 and Carmen F1 (sweet pepper) from TGS...

**** It's not just Craig's opinion for almost everyone I know of who has grow both Sungold Select and Sungold Select II thinks that the latter is closest to F1 Sungold. Many folks have tried to dehybridize Sungold F1 and results have varied widely. One of the parental inputs is a red currant tomato which breeds in the flat truss trait of almost all flat trait truss varieties, but many many folks end up getting red selections from their dehybridizations.

Last year (06) I grew SG Select II from a plant Craig gave me.
His produced red cherries and mine produced sun gold like fruit. I saved seed and grew it again this year, and got the sungold like fruit again. Same results from a volunteer plant that popped up where SG Sel II was in 06. So, in comparing SG, SG Sel, and SG Sel II at Tomatopalooza[tm], I can tell you that SG Sel II is the closest to SG that I've found. It's still missing that fruity taste that can be found in SG, but it's still good. One of my co-workers likes SG Sel II better than SG because it has more of a traditional tomato flavor to it. My kids like them both! Lee

The Select II is the closest to Sungold to my tastebuds. However, Sungold F1 is still my pick for taste (as long as "they" keep producing the seeds). Wouldn't be without it.
