Simple UV protection for containers

Its really simple, you need a good Exterior Acrylic paint in 2 colors.

1. First coat - Flat black, used as a primer, will block the UV rays from getting to the plastic, or whatever you are wanting protection on.

2. Second coat - A flat light colored Earthtone, will reflect the sunlight, and keep from overheating your soil-less mix.

Other paints you can use as a 1st coat are rubber or asphalt based.

But don't forget to do some simple painting preperation:

1. Rough up the surface with fine sandpaper to give the smooth surface a tooth for the paint to grab onto.

2. Next, wash with a degreaser, Ivory dish soap and water, rinse well.

I went to my local Lowes store and ask if they had black paint for a 10 gallon Sterilite container. They told me they couldn't guarantee that any paint, even the ones that are for plastic would stick. They said it was due to the kind of plastic Sterilite uses and that most likely the paint would come off the first time the container got wet. I settled for using two rolls of Duct tape, this one for the black layer

Folks,

Considering the extra cost of the paint, or duct tape and your time to apply them - isn't it almost as efficient to purchase the Centrex containers at Lowes to begin with. They have a lifetime warranty against cracking, etc. ...just a thought

This product carries a limited lifetime warranty, and you'll probably find out thats for only storage of items, not using it as a SIP.

31 gallon is too big for me. Even this one I found at Lowes was too big.

The have the Lowe's centrex totes in 18 gallon and 10 gallon sizes too. I'm using the 18 gallon size.

Do you have a link for the 10 gallon or 18 gallon totes you're referring to. I like my containers with thick walls that don't deform when you fill them.

Ray I still use a few totes for swc's so its good to know about these ones. I'm still purchasing the Rubbermaid ones that are only good for 2-3 seasons.

I've been using the Centrex totes for the past 4 years with excellent results. Not a single crack nor any spaling as of today. The fact that they provide an unlimited warranty is of great comfort. For reference, Rubbermaid provides only a one year warranty, which is virtually useless.

As I drill holes in them for the drain holes, etc. I rather doubt they would take them in return but just knowing they are confident enough to provide this type of warramty is testament itself.
