Oh no, that's a nightmare. Could happen to me too; I never backup data. Unfortunately I have lost many times important things but I never learn my lesson.
I hope you manage to remake your file with the old one and everything you remember.

I'm still using Office 2003 on my XP laptop. I guess that makes me outdated too.

If you are using a PC with Windows can't you just revert to an earlier date before the update? Say a week ago?

Yes, but your data files don't revert to any earlier version. The corrupted file will still be corrupt.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you, Nan...I can feel your pain. Pretty much all things computer are foreign to me, so reading through this thread, I was hoping someone knowledgeable would be coming to your rescue with something that might be able to help you.
If it can't be recovered, just try to remember how much fun you had in researching and putting it all together the first time around and realize that there's still plenty of time before our gardening starts in earnest in PA...AND, that it will likely NEVER happen to you again!

my husband said to ask you if you have Windows 10, he says a lot of that stuff is backed up to the cloud if you do even if you don't know about it. Look for One Drive.

Windows does have a data recovery tool that sometimes works (but not always).

I am still using Windows 7 so I am not sure about Windows 10 but if you go into Windows Explorer and right click on the file in question and open "properties" there will be a tab for Previous Versions.

Windows makes a back-up of data files when it creates a restore point. My garden plan file has a previous version but it is 2 months old. Maybe you would have one available that would be newer than mine or at least helpful.

I don’t have any suggestions for recovering your data, but I use Google Sheets for my garden database. It can be opened on any computer...... can even open it on my phone.

Did you try brownrexx's suggestion? Interested to see if it worked or not.

Marsha, I have Windows 10, but don't have it set up to backup to the Cloud.

Mike & Brownrexx: I did as you suggested, but it said no previous versions existed.

I've reconstructed some of the statistics, the grow list, garden layout, and have begun to work on the color coding. AND I've backed it up.

You're right, Kath, I do have fun working on this file.

I Would like to suggest that you take a look at LiBreOffice before you set up you next computer. It is a fork of OO But much more dependable in my experience. Set up a back up reminder, I use Reminder Fox. No investment - big returns, all you have to do is pay attention to it.

My husband said he thinks Windows 10 backs up to the cloud automatically with something called OneDrive. He says you don't have to actually go and set it up it just is. But he will research it for you later. He says he doesn't want to tell you the wrong thing.
