I'd say if you want to put some wood mulch on top for looks... go for it. I don't think there is really enough surface area in these containers for the reflective properties of the plastic film to have much effect.

Others may have more input regarding the filtered sunlight... I would expect that you would get a lot of greenery and not much fruit...
