A tomato better than Sungold? I think so!!
My wife and I stopped at one of the local grocery stores and I took a look at the tomatoes....I know that seems absurd considering I'm on the threshold of being overwhelmed with tomatoes but such is the life of a tomato fanatic.
I could not help but be drawn to a small package of orange tomatoes. The color was vivid and the price was reasonable considering what tomatoes go for so I bought a package. "Manderin orange" is used in the description. I took a bite from one and the flavor instantly reminded me of Sungold. The delicate, sweet, citrusy like flavor was incredible. Each tomato is two to three times the size of a Sungold. Of course I have no idea if these are hybrids or open pollinated but it goes without saying that I'm going to save seed. Jay |

Jay, since the word orange with Mandarin is only used in the description perhaps this variety is one from Japan called Mandarin Cross ( but it is stable).
If it is, the fruits that folks get are not as small as yours, more in the 6-10 oz range. It's been around since 1999 and apparently first listed by Glenn Drowns at Sandhill Preservation and is still listed. Taste comments from thoise who list it vary considerably. So you're saying there was no proper variety name given but the word Mandarin was there. And it is from Japan from whence cometh Sungold F1 as well.

Carolyn....nope, it didn't have a proper name but did indicate that it was a product of Canada. There was a little more in the description but it was only a one sentence description and just a few words with mandarin orange in there. I'll take another look at the package when I get home and will report back.

Jay, take a look at the thread below on tomato gems, go down to the post by Lilypon and in the second link you'll find Mandarin, the variety I'm sure you must have.
From Canada, grown hydroponically. For once something rang a bell in my brain.

Presumably a hybrid as is Sungold? Sounds like a commercial variety so why not save some seeds and see what you get?

I'm going to give it a try, Carolyn, and grow out some seed. If it's a hybrid, that would be a bummer with not being able to obtain the hybrid seed. Still, could be interesting.

I wonder if some folks wouldn't mind giving me some feedback of their overall impression of Sungold.
