Container potatoes - Page 2

Thanks. They were put in I think the third week in January. I have one that only emerged last week. I thought it had rotted but it had not.

It won't be long and yours will shoot up real fast.

no kidding about shooting up real fast, there is a noticeable difference in foliage growth in just one day.

They look great! I'm going to have to put more dirt in my buckets again- they are getting pretty big too! It's fun to have someone else doing this at the same time.

Tiffanie, how many seed potatoes or pieces do you have in that bucket?

Mark- I have one seed piece/ potato per 5 gallon bucket. I would not put in any more than that.

I am thinking Duane may want to carefully dig some of those out of there and replant them in other pots. It just looks way too tight. This is my first year growing so I should probably leave giving advice to people who have experience!!

Even in my raised bed, I think I have planted too many potato plants too close together. Based on what I have read, I will not plant them closer than 1' x 2' in the future. I just didn't realize they would grow so well.

Well, that looks great. I'm gonna try this in a few containers this year rather than the garden. That'll allow me to use the reserved garden space for MORE TOMATOES!!! (woo hoo!)

duajones said he planted into a 35gal container so he might be okay. If the plants keep growing up and he keeps adding dirt, there should be enough room for tubers. I am more concerned about air circulation and fungal diseases before the plant emerges out the top. It's hard for me to tell depth from the photo.

Mark- that's why I plant in containers. I'd rather save my good garden beds for other veggies including lots of tomatoes and peppers...

I may not have any success but so far even after adding soil, it looks great. I probably do have them too tight but since this is my first experience, the plan is to let them dig and see what happens. Learning experience for sure, but I just might get lucky. Or I could have complete failure. Either way it is a learning experience. Here's to new potatoes hopefully!!!!!
