Default Kniphofia-Tricoma-Torch Lily from seed?

I have somehow missed the boat on buying this plant, 3 years in a row. It's known variously by these 3 names. I used to see them in big box stores as bulbs and as seeds (Burpees). Well-stocked nurseries would have them for a short window of time and I would look, go home, then return to find them gone.
I decided to try the seeds once, succeeded in spouting 2, and they died. I know now the seeds need to be cold for a few weeks before sowing.
Has anyone grown these from seed? I might just wait till spring and look for them as plants again. HD online has them as bulbs but they are out of stock.
Any advice appreciated!
