Default Bloody Butcher

I have assembled my 2019 crop. They are all purchased plants. One plant is Bloody Butcher; first time growing it. I would be interested in hearing the experiences of those who have grown it.

I have grown it a few times. For me it was always the first to fruit. It also produced all through the very hot summer for me and still had fruit in fall. Flavour ranged from good to mediocre. Since I am in the desert, some fruit has poor flavour as soon as the heat builds up, so in other areas the taste may be much better.

I grow it about 10 years - in the garden and in the greenhouse. It is my earliest and tastiest kind.

No emoji for me, instead a few words to describe it.


Early tomatoes are notorious for bland flavor. Bloody Butcher is the exception in that it usually has very good but not sweet flavor. I recommend it to my customers as an early tomato in golf ball or a tad larger size.

I had to get the seeds online this year.
Burpee used to sell them in stores under the heirloom section.
A good early tomato.

I agree with everything said.

It was good as an early tomato - especially after enduring a few store bought tomatoes in salads during winter. But, the taste falls farther and farther behind the others as the season progresses. I would never slice one mid summer for a sandwich but they were still good for sauce.

I started growing it years ago just for the name, and have never been inclined to remove it from my "always grow" list. I now have market customers who request it by name. I find it both early and tasty, and productive to boot.

I grow it every year here in Atlanta - a good steady producer through the whole summer. Not incredibly prolific, but reliable and steady. Also seems to resist disease pretty well in our humid climate.
