I find it highly unlikely that heat is the problem unless all the seeds were sent at the same time and traveled the exact same route. NC Tomatoman sent me some seeds and I wasn't expecting them as soon as they arrived. Bottom line, the Heat Index was 120 degrees on the day they came and they sat in a black mailbox in full sun for many hours. Did not get the mail until that night. The next day was cooler, something like 105 HI. I put a thermometer in the mailbox and it was exactly 100 degrees in there. I was worried but I think all the seeds germinated at 100 percent or close to it.

For the results to be as bad for as many people as they are, it would have to be something happening closer to the source. Like something happening by the time they leave Vermont, in a postal vehicle, or the post office or on a sorting machine etc.
But it's just a speculative theory.

The seeds are coming from multiple sources, so calling it as bad seed before it was sent doesn't make much sense, we'd have some varieties with clearly higher germination and some with lower.

The 2014 germ. thread had somewhat poor results too. I wish I could figure it out.

Yes Marsha, exactly. I read those 2014 reports yesterday and they confirmed my memory that germination was generally poor. Carolyn doesn't agree......

I think it HAS to be something going on at the Post Office. Perhaps multiple mailings from one person arouse suspicion and get them zapped?

Above is the 2014 germination thread to which you referred. You have to go down a post or two to see where the 2014 reports started.

I read all 9 pages and many issues were brought up that I know some of you who came to Tville later know nothing about.

I was able to make some strong correlations on germination reports by different individuals based on how experienced they were which is indicated as to #of varieties grown in each persons icon..

But I'll let all of you who might be interested read the above link before I post about the correlations I made.

This germination thread was based on the 2014 one, but what's missing, sadly, are the instructions I gave back then, they just would not transfer but I copied them down highlighted them and sent them to myself.. And I made some major changes from the original instructions when I posted in this thread.

About all I can say is that I had one heck of a time trying to find what I wanted, highlighting, saving to an e-mail and sending it to myself.

Nope, not going to that again any time soon.

I had planted my seeds along with others in ocean forest mix. I got:

2016
Alice Egypt 0/6
Rab Srce 0/5
Sheryl Portuguese heart 0/6

2017
Grandpa Whites Red 0/5
Yaponets 0/8
That Russian Tomato 1/5

As you can see I had only 1 sprout out of the whole lot. I asked Shawn to send
Me more if possible and he was kind enough to do so. I am using a different medium (D.E.), This time around and I will report the results back soon. Hoping for better results as I was looking forward to trying out these varieties.

I have a variety (2011) from Romania that sprouted readily in D.E. So I’m hopeful...
The other tomatoes that I started in the ocean forest all came up fine...

(I was able to make some strong correlations on germination reports by different individuals based on how experienced they were which is indicated as to #of varieties grown in each persons icon..)

I posted above I think post 36 maybe.

Several of you have germinated the same varieties, have you compared your results with the same ones they had germinated.

Usually I would do that but have had NO TIME at all to do that, what with still trying to get seeds back to Lotte in Denmark,Jackie in MA, the mystery ones already requested, but most of all what now appears to be a local issue re being able to read articles online according to other locals in the area where I live. Mail system is OK,Faves are OK, but major problems with almost everything else.

I have NEVER been without some tomato plants anywhere and where I live now here at home, never, but I'm not so sure for this summer.

Rob, a local person has always raised my seedlings for me and for him, and I hope that will be true after I heard from him saying he just got married, still has to drive the long distance from here to Troy,NY, where he works.Rob was once and still is a registered member here at Tville, quite a few years ago

So fingers crossed that Rob will come through since he is having another property he owns by R.Slater, who we all know well, put in drainage, contour that land and much more.

And of course paying lots of attention to his new wife.

Carolyn, if Rob can’t come through for you, I have lots of plants, and can pack some up and mail them to you, or maybe even drop them off, as we will be traveling near you on our way to Ithaca in the middle of May.
No matter what, we simply CANNOT let you be without tomato plants!
Shawn
