Tania found this in old SSE yearbooks:

This is what I found in the SSE Yearbook (2007 and 2008) -

Cabin: OH AN A - HAS - 70 days, indet., regular leaf,
medium size tomato with old-fashioned flavor, from Gary
Millwood, Louisville, KY, Kentucky heirloom.
2010 SSE Yearbook:

Cabin IL KE D - HAS 70 days, indet., good producer of 8 oz.
fruit which has some yellow on shoulders, nice flavor, from OH AN A
OH AN A - HAS 70 days, indet., regular leaf, medium
size tomato with old-fashioned flavor, from Gary Millwood,
Louisville, KY, Kentucky heirloom.

My suspicion, the "new" Cabin PL was a mislabeled packet sent to Wintersown.

I may be the source of that Cabin (PL).

My original source was Gary Millwood. About 3,000 of my saved seeds were (indirectly) sent to Wintersown in 2008.

I don't remember the leaf type, because what's burned in my brain is the flavor, superb (in my garden). It would be in my all-time top 10 list if it weren't for the smallish (for a beefsteak) size. Mine were in the 5-12 ounce range, many about 8 ounces, nothing near the 26 ounces, mentioned above.

It's on my grow list for 2013. I'll see if my plants turn out to be PL's.

hmmm.

Gary Millwood is also a seed source for the RL version (unless of course it was a mistake in the SSE Yearbook re the leaf type).

Sounds like there is only one Cabin variety, it is just not very clear what its correct leaf type should be.

There is also KY Cabin Yellow available from Blue Ribbon Tomatoes, I bet the seeds also came from Gary Millwood. Maria mentions that it may be the same variety as "Buckeye Yellow"

Hmmmm...

I think I'll start a couple of my seeds today, to see what leaf type shows up.

Look at the link posted earlier. His plants sure look like PL and the description is for very large tomatoes (26 oz).

On e-bay Blue Ribbon lists the source of Ky Cabin as Gary Millwood who got the seeds at a tomato tasting. Seeds were sold in stall at a market by Megan & Todd Childers. Those seeds were from a friend - big yellow tomatoes grown in eastern Kentucky for years. Blue Ribbon said hers were under a pound but someone claimed to get big tomatoes. similar to Buckeye Yellow also a Kentucky tomato. Go to Blue Ribbon and read it for yourself and you can order seeds because it sounds like the same tomato.

Evidently not if I had read Jimmy Cracked Corn's blog carefully which clearly says his Cabin is dark pink and 4 oz.

I didn't find any description of a 26 ounce tomato, in the link. One said 3-8, averaging 4, another said 8-10 ounces. Also, it was described as a red.

Good morning everyone. I am the blog owner of Jimmy Cracked Corn on WordPress. I registered here because I wanted to say how excited I am to have everyone growing out the seeds I labelled as Cabin...that you are calling Cabin PL.

For the last few years I couldn't find anyone else growing this variety and I really wanted to make sure it didn't slip away permanently.

I did indeed grow a 26 ounce cabin in 2012, as well as a couple in the 1 pound range. The average for the plant is still 5-8 ounces.

Thank you for growing this tomato in 2013, and please post pictures.

There are at least a dozen posts on my blog about the Cabin variety. You can access most of them at this link: http://jimmycrackedcorn.wordpress.com/tag/cabin/

JCC,

Welcome to the 'ville.

As I said earlier in this thread, it's very likely that I was the source for the Cabin seed that went to Wintersown.

My first attempt, a while ago, at sowing 2005 seed was % germination. I have very few seeds of 2005, 2007, and 2008, so I'm waiting until it's time to germinate seeds that are going to make it to the garden. Until then I won't know if I have RL, PL or both. Hopefully, some will sprout.

Someone just sent me seeds of (Kentucky) Cabin. So, I'd like to test all three sources. Do you still have a few seeds to spare?

Gary
