Spacing on Peppers

I've been growing pepper almost as long as I grown tomatoes, not that I have put much thought into the peppers. Aside for expecting moderate to low germination rates I just slam them in the ground when I am done with the toms, harvest a big bunch in the early summer and buckets in the fall.
On to my question. I never really put much thought into the best method or growing peppers. Read some were pepper like to be close enough to other plant their leaves touch so I've always put them about 6 to 8 inches apart. I be interested to know what you folks think is this to close to far?

Everything I've ever read says something like 12-18 inches depending on the variety. How strange to be planting them after you are done with tomatoes though. Up here in New England they go & come at about the same time.

Weve usually kept a few in 2-3 gallon pots, they seem to like that OK.

I planted some in the in-between spots in my tomato bed this year. Ill keep you posted. theyre about a foot away from the tomatoes on either side.
