Default Barley

Are there any Barley growers here?

I am thinking of ordering some hulless barley and growing some this fall.

How does the flavor compared to store bought pearled barley?

Any recommendations or hints?

thanks,
Dean

Dean,

Does only having a couple of plants count?

If you can find a small bag of Bob's Red Mill hull-less barley, you can both taste it for yourself, and also plant some of it. That's how I did it.

For me, this hull-less barley tasted much better than pearl barley.
But, I don't care for pearl barley, at all.

I'll look to see if I still have some viable seed.

Gary

I have purple tibetan hulless barley and hulless oats. they are about 4" tall. I hope to get enough to grow for chicken feed in the future.

I definately have some really nice barley grain developing, the plants are almost died down, and the grain is plump. Not sure quite when to cut it, I'll wait till it's totally dry I guess. Any suggestions?

How do you sow it without a drill? Do you just broadcast and harrow?
