Default Silkcom's 2017 Garden Thread

This is my first year growing anything that is a specific variety, and I'm totally hooked. My goal for this year is to find out what things I like in tomatoes, which varieties do best here in utah and which ones are the most fun to work with.

Here's my list:
Black Cherry
Oranzhevy Slon
Big Orange V
Tommy Toe
Super Sweet 100
Orange Banana
Mortgage Lifter
San Marzano
Delicious
Cherokee Purple
Carbon Copy
The Dutchman
Black Krim
"Black Krim 2" (which I think is Sgt Peppers, I marked it wrong)
Aunt Ruby German Green
Big Rainbow
Not Purple Strawberry
Samocvet Nefritovy
Sungold F1
Ananas Noire
Brandywine Red
Kavalier

Late Comers - probably won't get much, but hopefully at least enough to get a decent seed count.
Not Maglia Rose (from dfollett, he says they're amazing, i'll have pictures of these, they're only about a month late)
Sweet Sharon
Sinister Minister
Reverend Michael Keyes
Sgt Peppers (just in case the ones above aren't)

Inside:
Tiny Tim
and eventually a bunch more micro dwarves

Default Seedlings - April 9th and 13th

I've hopefully attached 2 images of seedlings from back in april. Next post will be from may 1st, and then i'll go out and take pictures of the ones hardening off right now. You can see in the bottom picture that i'm following Craig's way of planting 20+ seeds in 1 tiny area. I personally use individual 2x2 nursery pots, works great.

Default May 1st

Here's some pictures of my seedlings on may 1st, I was getting ready to put them all outside to start hardening off (I just leave them out in a shaded table for a few days)

Default Hardening Off - May 8th

Ok, here's my latest. I have some beans out there too, a yellow bell pepper, and some daisies, but everything else are the tomatoes .

Got them all in the ground. 66 total in the ground, and I'm building a bucket system that will house 8 more (have to test stuff out every year right?).

This picture is 1 of the 3 rows I have planted this way. I prune them to a single vine because they're packed in so tightly.

Ignore the winter sowing jugs and the garbage that isn't cleaned up yet

Looks great! I'm doing lean and lower this year and love it so far. Are you using tomahooks? Just had work by Berry Hill Irrigation supply and will be switching over to tomahooks.

Sinister Minister! Love the name. My Rev. Keyes was one of the few that didn't germinate this year.

Keep us updated!

I'm making my own tomahooks because I'm using thicker "wire" (just heavy duty bailing twine). They're pretty easy to make out of a board and some screws. Here's a picture of my jig. I just drew out a tomahook and then drilled the picture onto the board where the folds are.

Excellent idea. In fact, I'd like to try making some modified hooks for my set up. What did you use for the wire of your modified tomahook? (What gauge wire, where do I get it, etc?)

I used 12 gauge wire. http://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Hillm...2339/203721762

fair warning use gardening gloves or something. It wears out your finger tips

here's to hoping that the plastic worked last night. I haven't taken it off yet (was still below 40 when I left for work), but it hit about 27 down in my garden last night .

thanks. The plastic worked well. I have a few dead leaves, and I think 1 dead main stem, but all the plants are still alive.
