Does anyone know of the history on this one?
**** Sure thing. Dick and Jane from OH dyed their unsheared standard white poodle, named "Dog" , a lovely shade of dark pink. Dog went swimming in a creek nearby and came out with some debris in his mouth, and admixed in the debris were some tomato seeds. Upon sowing the seeds Dick and Jane got an indet, PL plant with about 2 # dark pink fruits with green shoulders. DTM about 75-85 days. They were so enthralled with this variety, taste and production were superb, that they started distributing seeds within a close community of their friends. I guess that a friend they gave seeds to sent it to you. Wasn't that the way it happened? I'm surprised that the person who gave you seeds didn't tell you the background behind this variety.

Carolyn,
I think I got seed from someone that got seed and so on. I thought it was a Ky heirloom. It was listed on the Ky heirloom list of Bert (Spider). Thanks so much for the info.

P.S.
That history almost sounds made up. LOL. Not saying you did that, just saying truth is stranger than fiction sometimes.

hummmmmmmm....... Has a familiar ring to it. BTW, was their poodle named Spot?? Think I read about Dick, Jane & Spot back in the 1st. grade, 1947. Did they have a little sister named Sally?? Well... I'll be darned!! Did not know they were tomato enthusiasts too!!!!

Below is the description that Dunkel provided me when he sent me Purple Dog Creek seeds last fall. Sadly, my seeds did not germinate due to a bad cell pack.
Purple Dog Creek is a very rare family heirloom from the small community of Dog Creek near Munfordville Kentucky. I say it's very rare because very few have seeds for it outside of Dog Creek. The tomatoes were served as part of a "thank you" outside dinner served to a WV preacher and members of his congregation. They went to Dog Creek to do home improvements for the low income elderly of the area. The preacher liked the tomatoes so much he asked if anyone had seeds for them. One of the guys at the supper had grown and brought them. He went home and brought the preacher back some seeds. One of my friends in Martinsburg WV is a member of the preachers church. They got to talking about the trip to Dog Creek and the preacher offered some seeds to my friend. He grew them and loved them. He sent me some last year and I grew them this year. They are dark pink less than 1 pound although I've heard they grow to 18 oz. They are very good. Strong plant and fairly productive

*** Well what the heck do you think I've been doing? Standard poodles are very smart and I've never known one to not spit out tomato seeds. Ah Larry, yes, Spot and Sally and Dick and Jane; we are of roughly the same age you know. Sheesh , I can't believe some of you folks actually believed what I wrote. Next time I'll make those histories so good you won't know truth from fiction.

Terry,
You're spooky. Purple Dog Creek, the one variety, out of about a thousand, that I lost/misplaced about a year ago, turns up the day you start a thread on it. Gary |
