Default Do grubs cause problems for tomatoes?

I know they can tear your lawn up but do they mess with tomatoes? I am a little concerned. I planted out 7 test plants today and every hole I dug had multiple white grubs near the surface. Should I be worried? Thanks!

when i 1st had this garden it was old meadow. there were tons of japanese beetle grubs in the soil. they never seemed to bother anything, no idea what they ate as grubs. so i tend to think no but there are many different insects that are a grub so i can't say no grub just what i experienced here.

Japan-beetle adults favored my pole beans more than tomato plants. I dunno what the buggers eat as grubs.

Maybe moles? Then at least, there would be some excuse for their existance...

oh definitely, jb eat pole beans! moles eat grubs, i think grubs eat roots.

there is no excuse for moles, like ticks, skunks and poison ivy if i could i'd rid the earth of all these. yes i know moles aerate the soil but they suck.

I agree that there are many kinds of grubs but the ones that I know of that affect tomatoes the most are the grubs that become cutworms and chew off newly set out tomato seedlings that don't have sturdy thick stems.

Add gophers to that list as well. I've lost about 15% of this years' garlic and I patrol every day!
