Default when to divide and plant pepper seedlings

My pepper seedlings are 3-5 inches high, and I'm wondering how long to wait before dividing them and leaving them to the mercy of the slugs and snails in my garden. If I divide them into individual pots, most of them will have to go to the garden -- no room indoors. Last year, I put out seedlings this size (earlier in the season, though) in my cold frame and they promptly got munched.

On the one hand I probably have enough multiples that I can experiment, but on the other hand I like to pot them all up at once in the garden, so once they get to the garden site they stay there.
