Default Lightening Bugs - Friend or Foe?

For some reason this season i'm finding tons of lightening bugs on a bunch of my plants. Are they friend or foe?

Childhood memories makes me feel bad knocking them off my plants, but i don't want them to eat everything. I can't really tell if they're doing any damage either.

Whenever you visit my grave,

say to yourselves with regret

but also with happiness in your hearts

at the remembrance of my long happy life with you:

No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you,

and not all the power of death

can keep my spirit

from wagging a grateful tail.

Ooooooh, I like 'em - they eat slugs!! Learn sumpin' new every day.

Growing up with them, I never thought they were "unusual", but we had some friends of ours visit from Colorado, and their two kids had never seen fireflies/lightning bugs. The wonder in their eyes/faces was priceless as they collected them in jars, took them to bed and probably watched them all night!

Marvelous how kids can re-open our eyes to the wonders of nature that we've become so accustomed to.
