My garden update
I haven't posted lately--have been trying to adapt to my macular degeneration . After considering leaving T'ville, your support has helped me a lot, and I am still here. Life is a huge struggle- I keep a patch over my right eye since it distorts things so badly, so I pray that what vision my left eye has will stay stable enough that I can function. Here are some photos of my garden- overall it is a great year despite some disappointments.
I tried to add names to the photos but no luck. The carrots are YAYA, Beans are Kwintus, tomatoes are Earl's Faux, and drying herbs are Greek Columnar Basil and Cutting Celery. (sorry the photos are so big- it's so hard for me to use my computer!) Hugs to you all--Jo |

WOW!!! Your harvest is outstanding. They are the most beautiful carrots I've seen.
You are a great gardener. Last edited by Barb_FL; August 5, 2018 at 05:35 PM. |

Jo, very nice all around. You are delighting us with these photos of your bounty-thank you.
That is one mean BLT. The pic of the hanging herbs intrigues me. I've never heard of that type of basil. My wife is Greek, so I'm going to ask her. Nice that we still have you with us. Hang in there. |

Greek Columnar Basil is wonderful, especially if you grow it to harvest and cook with. (you can read all about it by Googling it) It's best feature is that it doesn't form flowers so doesn't need trimming. The growth is fairly narrow, and about3 feet tall by about 18" wide. It likes some afternoon shade. I keep mine through the winter by keeping cuttings rooted in water on a sunny windowsill. The only garden shop that has it in my area is Fred Meyer-- I never find it anywhere else. The taste is awesome! I use it dries with minced garlic to make slow roasted cherry tomatoes--so yummy!

About the carrots- all I did was rinse them with the garden hose spray !!! Some of them were pretty hairy, and I thought they would need to be scrubbed, but what you see is exactly as they looked- I was amazed ! They are perfect--YAYA is the only variety I have grown for 3 years. I buy a good amount of seeds and grow 2 crops each year. The photo shows the area that I just pulled (circled) and my next crop in the left pyramid. The pyramids were built for strawberries, but I never got a good crop, but the carrots love the deep soil !

Thanks! I'm going to watch for that one at my local nurseries. It sounds like something I would want to grow

Jo, I'm so happy to see what a great harvest you're having!!!
Really glad you didn't leave Tville or give up on gardening, my goodness everything is so pristine and luscious, they could put you to work in quality control. I love the pyramid design in your garden. May have to do something like this myself. |
