Since Cherokee Purple is from Tennessee, and since Univ. Tennessee's colors are orange (and white), why not name the little orange line "Pearly Gates" in honor of the second best basketball coach in the country, Bruce Pearl of the Volunteers.

Good idea Travis. I'm starting to run out of season, but I'll give the cross a try. I emasculated a couple flowers on a IS x Sungold F2, which I assume will be red. My potted CP x Sungold F2 plants are looking pretty hagard, but still OK as a pollen source.

Here are some possibilities for the names that I have not ruled out yet. Anymore suggestions are welcome, there is no hurry in the naming. Maybe if we can eventually get down to a refined list of 5, we can vote. But first we need some more suggestions.

Cherokee Sunrise
Golden Cherub
Purple Sun and Purple Sun Drops(recall these are browns)
Dog Cherry
Pearly Gates

hi Vince -

I'm just getting the little Sun Gold-type fruit on this F1, but I'll save seed. The plant is now about 5 feet, no problems with disease. Brix levels average 9.0, and the flavor is typical for a yellow cherry.

Goodwin please explain the brix level? Scale and calibration to sungold or other sweet varieties. I know it has something to do with sugar content and am way to lazy to look it up. Thanks.

hi Vince -
Brix is the percent soluble solids in a sample of juice, and a good indicator of the flavor and sweetness of a fruit. It's also used to gauge the general health of the plant and soil and the proper moisture levels. For tomatoes, 8% is considered good and 12% excellent. For cherry tomatoes here are some comparisons from Friday when I picked for market:
Rose Quartz 7.6
Lee Williams 8.0
Yellow Submarine 8.3
Isis Candy 8.3
Sara Galapagos 8.6
Green Doctors 9.1
Black Cherry 9.8
Sun Gold 10.4
Koralik 11.2

Yeah - basically, it's the mass ratio using the index of refraction of the liquid. The scale is zeroed with distilled water.
Anyway, looks like you're getting some interesting traits emerging in your grow outs. Keep us posted.

Took some of your cherry tomatoes to market. People gobbled them up and you are now sort of somewhat famous if you weren't already!

They look very tasty! Definately save at least 500 seed. I have one orange small selection so far from the red a F2, it was extraordinarily scrumptious. I am pretty sure we are going to end up with some open pollinated orange cherries as good or better than sungold.

Got a nice Pink F2 from orange B, go figure. Many fruit set on the big and small Cherokee Sunrise F3 (working names). I think we will see some purples here. Just a fabulous fall crop so far.....Any reports from the others......?
