Default Cucurbits - how many plants per hill?

For squash, cucumbers and melon, how many plants per hill do you recommend? I have all mine planted along a southwest facing wall spaced about 3' apart. I'll train them out into the yard where they have as much room to grow as they need. Right now, I have three per hill, thinking that I might lose a few vines to borers. Any thoughts?

For summer squash I go with two. For the others or winter squash I will leave three to four.
