Default wall of water seed starting

I've noticed that over the years my vollenteer tomatoes seem to do better than my transplants. This year I'm doing something different.
I put up my wall of waters today and am going to let them heat the ground for a couple of weeks , then I'm going to try direct seeding in them, instead of starting in the house as usual. Has anyone here tried this before and if so how did it turn out?
