I've thought about it. If I thought that I'd be in this house for more than a couple more years, I probably would... but since it seems unlikely, it doesn't seem worth the investment or the hassle. Not to mention that my HOA would probably freak out.

elight,

If your not sure what's taking the tomatoes, set mouse traps and see how many you catch.
If your sure it's mostly squirrels, then trap a few and I bet the problem will lessen. Not all the squirrels you see are tomato bandits. In my yard there are many squirrels, but there's only one that's bold enough to come up on my carport looking for food.
What about buying an inflatable snake or two?

Harvest fruit early and let it ripen in a paper bag.
