another story is the "can I pick as much as I want" polite thief approach.
My nephew said yes without thinking and they cleaned his garden out of basil.

I had about the same thing happen just a few weeks ago. a friend asked if I had extra egg carton (people drop them off to me all the time) so I said I had plenty. please help yourself to what you NEED. they took them all. hundreds of egg cartons.

A guy has an apple tree close to the road,I pick a windfall to eat as I am walking.
One year he had a sign, free apples.
One guy showed up with a ladder and picked them all.

I can't even believe the nerve. I would have a few things to say to her.

I think what would offend me most is the suggestion that she's somehow taking better care of my tomatoes than me.... ooh that burns me up on your behalf.

Did you ever have a talk with her? Ugh.

I had that problem some time back. Went on vacation, asked a neighbor to please water my container plants, in return she could have some tomatoes. Gone one week and when I got back, she KEPT picking my tomatoes, some of which I needed (as you did) for my research!
