I've been pondering the same thing this week...

I used to go by the "6 weeks before last frost date" and would start seeds on or around March 1..now I think that that is awfully late...but if you start in the next couple of weeks, and plant out around mid-March, what if you have a frost? It is still possible in zone 8...does everyone just cover their plants when this happens?

I do feel the need to start getting a jump on the season because many varieties won't set fruit for me in our heat...

I'm thinking maybe I'll go for it and start some of my longer DMT tomatoes around Feb 1 this year and see if I can baby them through any late cold snaps. We'll see if that helps with fruit set...
