I had 21" rain in 48 hrs (now called the" Epic Nashville Flood"). Thanks to the raised beds they survived, I just had to re-fertilize and they bounced back
my rain gage overflows at 8" I emptied it 3 times (and thats not counting the time between emptying the gage)but I am being realistic in saying 21"due to wind ect... Last edited by Aphid; June 20, 2010 at 09:27 AM. |

Roger on the re-fertilize.....but that means I have to water again so maybe in a week or so. Some of the plants will live but minus like 75% of their foliage and growing tips. I still think they will put on new growth and bear fruit for fall. I'm going to start a few new ones from seed and show the comparison. My thoughts are that the flooded plants already have an established root system. Either way I think it will provide a valuable resource for future gardeners faced with a similar situation?
21" of rain!?!? How tall are your raised beds? I'm defiantly rebuilding the garden this year so trying to determine a "safe" height for the beds. Thanks! Jason |

mine are roughly 18" tall, I stacked 2) 2 x 10's. reinforced with internal corner brackets.
I also stapled metal screen on the bottoms to keep out the moles. I used raw pine and gave it 2 heavy coats of boiled linseed oil, than once they were in place I used a grey fence stain on the outsides to kinda blend in with the house and extra protection ...so far after 5 years no signs of rot. the tomatoes love the deep beds and will easilly grow an 18" taproot |

Thanks Aphid, I like the boiled linseed oil too. 5 yrs with no rot sounds like a real winner for sure! I have some elm I'm going to cut up so hopefully it will take the linseed oil. I will post pics in the fall
