Paste and cherry cross?
What could I expect from the F1 plants?
by FAR the best looking and producing plants out of my 20 are black cherry and opalka. I'm curious what you guys think would go down if I hybridized the two. thanks, matt |

I predict a small to medium sized red or pink globe shaped in the F1

You know, come to think of it the F1 may not be globe shaped. I havn't done a cross with an elongated paste, but I know with heart shaped varieties you often see the shape recessive heart shape somewhat expressed in the F1. So maybe you'll get something a little bigger than the cherry parent, slighlty elongated with a dimple at the end.

Opalka x Black Cherry will be round in the F1, red and about 2 ounces in weight.

I have not made that cross and was just responding to the original question. I'd like to see that cross made though. Sounds interesting.

Awesome. Thank you guys so much for the feedback. I'm not experienced at all with this stuff, but have a strong interest in science and genetics. I look forward to learning about all of this.
Would you guys go blk cherry x opalka, or the other way around? What really is the difference? |

There would be no difference in the genetics of the F1 whether you went BC x Opalka or vice versa.
However, I found Opalka pistils to be very fragile, assuming you plan to emasculate the blossoms. And using the cherry as the pollen recipient is not the usual best choice because of small flowers and fewer seeds. But then Opalka has a low seed count too. So, I would try both ways (reciprocal crosses). Good luck. |

I'm growing a F1 Olpaka x one of my cherry breeding lines (derived from Matt's Wild Cherry and other stuff) and the F1 is about half the size of Olpaka and elongated. It basically looks like a mini Olpaka, but smoother. Quite delicious and productive. I'm looking forward to the F2s next year.

Sorry Carolyn, I didn't write that very clearly, and I always misspell Opalka for some reason. The cross is Opalka x my unnamed cherry, and I am currently growing the F1 generation from that cross.
