Sungold X CP
I decided to make a new thread since the title of the last thread is misleading. What I mean is that this is not an open seed offer(been recieving PMs). We had about 8 people participate in the grow out this year, and hopefully they will continue. I will likely distribute(dec. jan.) more seeds for the 2010 season after I start to get seed saved from this years participants in the mail. Keep an eye on the this thread and I will let you know when new seeds will be distributed. In the mean time enjoy the pics and descriptions of the Browns and purples I will be posting here.
4 different Brown F3s two on the left are from the small brown F2 line taste superb 8.5+ These are the ones on the right. The light brown one has good flavor. The Darker one has very good flavor.

Did you get any with 3 or more seed cells and a flatter, mini-beefsteak shape?

Vince - I'll be sending F2 seed from the two new F1 plants I grew this year, both of which were large red cherries. I have a few F3 families (red or orange, photos posted on earlier thread) tracing to F1 Orange B. Do you want seed of these also?

"Did you get any with 3 or more seed cells and a flatter, mini-beefsteak shape?"
Travis I have observed beefsteaks in the F2 and F3 stage. Seed saved from big 2oz+ cherries in the F2 will give some beefsteaks in the F3. Also, what is interesting is the skin color variation. Have got pinks from F2 oranges and I have observed purples from both of the F2 Brown lines. Some of these cherries have really exeptional flavor and I can't wait get some of these lines stabilized. "Do you want seed of these also?" Frogsleap, Yes I would like seed for all of them. I will pm you later if you happen to miss this.

Yes, I learned this summer that the saladette sizes you can get from this type of cross are really quite good and useful at the table. You have some really promising stuff there.

Are these actually sungolds crossed with cherokee purples?
That 8.5+ , is that a brix value or just a taste of 1-10 scale?? |

Fun and the discovery of Unusual and Exeptional Tasting tomatoes! Although many different sized and colored cultivars will arise from this cross, the imediate goal is to get some OP cherries with truely amazing and distinct flavor. We are nearly there with the darks. The selections I am growing out(F4 now) are among the BEST tasting cherries I have tried. These cherries are a million times better than black cherry, or any other dark cherry I have tried. They have a distinct and arguably superior flavor compared to sungold and Cherokee purple.

Hey Vince
Hey buddy.
I see that you're in pasadena...I'm in atwater village, right by you. Right next to griffith park. If you need could use some extra space for grow-outs, I could take a few. Otherwise I look forward to seeing what this project yields. Matt |

Vince - I've still got several families from this cross going in my nursery, and several new F1 crosses to this germplasm. All in all, a very useful and interesting cross. Here is what I believe is a F5 generation brown cherry tracing to F4 seed you sent me last winter. It's extremely productive, w/ excellent leaf disease tolerance, and quite tasty. The second photo is a F2 fruit from the cross (LizBert and a CPSun F1).

Really nice frogsleap.
I grew many out this year, all the small chocolate and purple selections. Some exceptional flavors here. Will make a more detailed post later.
