Bumping this thread.
Worth here is your answer that you have been patiently waiting for (hope it is correct!) Its because each fruit goes through a color progression: green/ white /lemon/ red. The leaf color also is unique. Does anyone have an opinion of this or Lutescent / Honor Bright . There is some buzz in the breeding threads but not much on its performance as a cropper. The unique leaf color could be useful as a "landmark" for rows. My signs faded and everything seemed to grow into each other last summer. - Lisa |

The foliage is a sickly looking yellow, gasp. It's felt that there was one mutation that caused mutations in sereral other genes as well. It was Craig LeHoullier, (nctomatoman), who first made the connection between Livingston's Honor Bright and Lutescent. Now the downside. I consider it as a novelty only, the ripe fruits are not tasty, IMO, and not tasty more generous than what I wanted to say, and I would never grow it again. But as a novelty, like growing Reisetomate, it' s interesting to see. And if you want a bit of a laugh, consider what Livingston himself said about it in this link from Tania's website: http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Lutescent Carolyn

Lisa,
Thanks for bringing back this thread. Worth has been waiting (one day short of two years). Unfortunately, your answer is not correct, as Perpetual Change is not Lutescent/Honor Bright. It is a Stump of the World variant that produces both PL and RL plants. Saved seed from either leaf type plant produces both leaf type plants. Change refers to the leaf type changing back and forth between PL and RL. Dr. Lve Apple |

I don't know, Lisa.
I'm confused over Worth's confusion. But, I think I'll name a tomato after Worth. If I cross Eva Purple Ball with something, I think I'll name it Ball of Confusion. Gary or Tormato or Dr. Lve Apple P.S. And the band played on. |

How do you have time to be a smarty butt with the tomato swap and extra red beans going on?

You could call it Worth-less, Worth while or Money's Worth, but Worth's Confusion would be good too!
You could breed a fuzzy one and call it Wool Worth Linda |

I thought there was some confusion on its origin, name or something.
That is the reason I'm am confused about the confusion. Now I'm really confused. Worth |

The "Honor Bright" or Lutescent gene is pretty interesting. There are some leaps of connection - no one had any original Honor Bright seeds, but Gleckler sold something called Lutescent in the 1950s or 1960s - certainly the description fits, but we don't know if the Livingston release had larger/better flavored fruit. I got Lutescent via a SSE transaction as well. The description of a yellow phase is iffy - I've not seen it, but what is striking is how white the unripe fruit are - so white to orange to red is typical. It will always be one of the weirdest plants in the garden!
The gene has shown up one other time in my tomato collection - I got Turkey Chomp from Don Branscomb (he sent dozens and dozens of varieties, many of which I shared with Carolyn - no way we ever got to growing them all out) - it was typically a regular leaf red tasty indeterminate tomato, but one plant was potato leaf - and has the lutescent gene package - yellowy foliage, and white to green to red fruit color phases - but larger (to 12 ounces), oblate, and pretty tasty. I named it "Surprise" because...well, it sure was! I've worked that weirdo gene set into our dwarf project, but it is in early stages of exploration - I crossed Honor Bright/Lutescent (as purchased from Victory) with Dwarf Scarlet Heart to produce the Scotty family. There are some regular leaf and potato leaf, yellow foliaged dwarfs out of it, one with heart shaped fruits - one with pink fruit - fruit color phase white to pale green to the ripe color, flavor from not very good to promising. Pretty plants...and weird!

Yes I am still out of my choice. I guess. If I was interested in such matters I would go into it head first like I always do. But since I am not I am confused. Mostly because much of it baffles me to no end. You see I can't see the things that cause the confusion. Such as DNA and Genetics. All I see is the result of it. |

I'm now with you on the confusion. A few years ago I wasn't. But now after reading through all of the related threads, I don't know if I started with seed from Stump of the World or Big Ben (BB previously called SOTW). And, my growouts for the past 4 trials have all produced RL seedlings. So, whatever it is, it may no longer be changing.
