Weather is a fascinating subject.

At the moment we are in the middle of the spring windy season which is a foehn wind off the Southern Alps much like the Chinook of Canada but the temperature is not as extreme, the cloud formations are the same. Would love to visit Lethbridge and see the Chinook, it would feel like been home. The wind is call 'The norwesta' here, some springs it can blow for weeks on end and being a very low humidity wind it dry things out fast, can be as low 10%-20%. Can get very strong too, not many places in the world where it could be blowing at 140kmph, lovely and warm and not a cloud in the sky.

140 kph is a serious storm! I didn't realize that NZ had it as windy as we do - of course it stands to reason, being out in the ocean.... We do get 140 from time to time but these are hatch battening events generally in fall or winter and loaded with precipitation.

I confess my first thought upon reading your post.. "Gee that'd be great for the laundry." But only if you can keep it from blowing away, ahem.

Yes great for the laundry alright, just about take the laundry to the line and take it back inside dry in one trip not quite!

The southern temperate zone gets a lot more wind than its northern counterpart as we have the roaring 40's that does at times gives us that foehn wind and huge rainfalls on the west side https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaring_Forties

Well... really fascinating! It is more than just the roaring 40's, as you mentioned the mountain topography plays a major role... yowza.

We have something similar here in NL, at a place called Wreckhouse. The wind funnels through the mountains when it blows from the Southeast and reaches devastating wind speeds and gusts (160 kph+) which routinely blow over trucks. The name 'wreckhouse' was originally given for blowing trains off the tracks.

the weather here has taken a turn.

after having a 70 degree day late last week, the wind kicked up, 50 mph gusts knocked out power sporadically through out the U.P. the lights flickered at work, but we never lost power. and rain, falling near horizontally made for a miserable outdoor experience. temps have dropped to the low 30s, so now we have a snow mix falling. friday may be bringing a few inches of snow. fair weather days are dwindling, and still have tasks to finish before winter sets in.

wood stove is cranking, and we are toasty in doors.

Yah, I think we're about to get that massive front down here in a couple days.

I do like the anticipation of a change in weather. And the reality -- for the first few weeks. After a couple months of cold it gets old and one pines for the blazing heat. Texas will satisfy you both ways, in time.

I never pine for blazing heat ever.
If I had to put snow shoes and a parka on it would be better than stepping outside in the morning to 90 degree heat before the sun came up.
This morning it is 46F outside and I was running around barefoot in my underwear and no shirt to get something out of the truck in the dark.
Smokes.

I never could see why people would want to lay out in the hot sun and roast.
At least not down here.

We are having some kind of halcyon here for a couple of days, no wind to speak of and highs may get up above 60 F here inland, if the sun stays out. Nights will likely be frosty.

Ohh, it is shivery cold this morning! Got down to 40 last night here, not that cold, but coming a bit fast after the heat, so it's a contrast and I'm not used to it yet. Had a blanket and the quilt and the cat last night, nice and snuggled in. Belle is getting her winter coat, too.

Anyway. Back to the,weather . It is perfect fall weather , to me. Highs around 70 and lows in mid 40s..nothing to worry. My peppers are doing great. Just planted about 100 onion sets. Garlic patch is ready. I will plant about 100 cloves before Thanksgi ving. Then start celeberating and getting lazy.
