Here's another link which mentions that the short illness was cancer.

That pic of grub is classic.
I still have some of the seeds he so generously sent to me.
I cannot even think of the dwarf project without thinking of him...

Thanks for the news. I too remember his many witty posts from the beginnings of Tomatoville. How tragic for his family. Needed a green when ripe for my 2019 list and Grub's Mystery Green is indeed a great tomato .
