Took a step back from Tomatos due to Nematodes but back into it this year with satisfying success (So Far ) ..

Mate you raising seed now down that way??, not a tad cold for yous ??..

Also wish to ask how many onboard are seeding in soilblocks rather than the seed punnets ??.
Ive mucked around and made my own soilblockers with some Aloy box and PVC Round and so far very happy with the outcome .
When seedling big enough just drop the soilblock in the ground and cover a tad..

Welcome back to Tomatoville Volvo.


We've been quite cold here over the last month, with a week of frosts at a time. I usually start on 28 July each year, but trying for advanced plants this season. Once the seeds have germinated, it's easy to raise the seedlings, even in the cold.



I don't use soil blocks and the Block maker tool is a bit pricey for the amount of times I'd use it. My preferred method is Propagation Mix into a Seedling tray (not punnets) and sow seed in rows. This season I pricked out before first true leaf showed. 56 seedlings in 12 varieties.

I sow into cell trays, either punnet size with multiple cells or a 6 x 4 cell tray with cells about 5 cm square depending on how many plants of each variety I want. I also aim to sow in late July, but may aim for a bit earlier this year. I then pot up into tubes and plant from them.

Even though we are only an hour apart rainfall here is very different to Mcsee. Very wet underfoot at the moment with only a couple of short blocks of frost so far

My Problem is Summer humididty, fruit fly and pests to no end hence prefer to grow in winter here..
