I'm planting today too...I'm the world's worst for jumping the gun...it's not the temps that keep my seedlings inside though...it's the rain. For the past 4 years we've had monsoons in April/May resulting in a flooded garden underwater.Last year it was in May....we got 15 3/4" in the month of May...it was June before I could get plants in the garden.

Tomstrees,

Use of peat pellets is a great way to start your seeds!
Don't let the pellets become too soaked or too dry, find a happy medium. A humidadome plastic top helps govern the moisture, just drain off condensation, every day. Add water as required... Use of a heating mat underneath at a 75 F setting speeds everything up alot!

I'll charge up my digital and take pics of pepper starts in peat pellets. Post later...

Randy

wow - what an experience ...
I used warm water to "awaken" the peat pellets in the seed cells -
THEY GREW AND FILLED THE ENTIRE CELL with a peat mixture !!!

I waited a while until everything settled down, lol, and then planted 2-3 seeds per cell ...

Misted lightly again, and put the ole bio-dome on top !

I took some pictures that I'll post tomorrow morning ...
If all works well, this was the easiest seed sowing I've ever done !

Took me only 3 hours to finish !!!
But that was because of so many varieties ...
But again ... very easy to use -
Fingers crossed waiting for results !

Well the 72 cell flats work great for me. Just out of curiousity, I sowed some tomato seeds last spring in peat pellets in trays after it was way too late. And because I did not have lights, they got really leggy. I knew nothing!

I'd let the air circulate a bit every day by removing or sliding the cover over a few inches. There's such a thing as too moist.

So far I think they are great.
They are def. a better item to start your plants in compared to peat pots ...
When seedlings emerge, I'll put them in my very bright south facing widow which should keep them at bay and not getting too leggy.

Last year I started on Feb.28 which was WAAAAAY to far out ...
my plants were close to 13 weeks old and had to be repotted twice!

This year my start on March 17th seems more like a realistic start date ~
More pics to come ...

~ Tom

ps.
Had 2 marigold seeds pop up this morning - I held it open with the side of a pencil ... will see whats what when I get home tonight ...

Two more cells up: Black Prince & Sweet 100
(I forgot to start cherries later) ... Things should get really interesting once they all start to break !
Wow !
I've already propped up one corner with the side of a pencil ... should be interesting ...

I've used the peat pellets but they aren't my favorite. No bad results to speak of, I just feel compelled to remove the netting like the others have mentioned. My usual way is to just buy the trays and fill them with commercial seed starting mix, whatever the stores happen to have.

Not bad for my first time. So far everything is going well.
I'm def. going to use this system again.
Only a few didnt come up; but I think it was due to bad seed.
Also peppers seeds are late to come up as expected.\
