Anyone know breeder info on Red Alert ?
Bugs me to death when I am growing a variety and don't know any history about it. The only info I could find is on one website that listed country of origin as Mexico but im not sure if that info is reliable.
Does anyone know anything further about it, if it is from Mexico then perhaps there are Mexican growers here who know who was the breeder or the date it was introduced etc ? |

Here's a quick internet search I did just now. A couple of these sites are in the UK. Hope this helps.

My understanding is that British breeder Simon Crawford created Red Alert F1, which was introduced in the early 1980s. I recall hearing it described as the only decent determinate available for British growers. From observation, Simon seems to have a close historical tie with Sutton seeds, and recently has been involved with Burpee Europe. One of his newer varieties (2014) is called Crimson Crush, aka Cloudy Day in North America and is supposed to exhibit great blight tolerance. He was also involved with "Gourmet Genetics" (Black Opal, Rosella, Sweet Aperitif) until 2016. I looked at the GG site today and all record of he & his wife's involvement have been removed.
I have grown Red Alert F1 a few times - it is a short determinate, early, and I found the taste to be pretty average. I'll give Cloudy Day a try at some point since it seems like it might be ok here (Zone 3a).
