Patty, I located the variety Eros in the SSE YEearbook and the one you mentioned at Tania's website and she says no history is known to her and I couldn't find any either. She also says the same about Eros as in no history

Eros may be the same as Extra Eros________ and Sandhill lists Eros so when the time of year isn't so busy you might try e-mailing Glenn and asking him if he knows about one or both of them as to history.

Thought the name Eros sounded familiar - so checked back to my 1991 Abundant Life catalouge - kept this one because I liked the cover ...

Anyhoo, Eros. Early-maturing medium size flavorful East German red variety introduced by Abundant Life. determinate; staking optional. Good for salad use.

Recevied from Czech breeder Milan Sodomko in 1976 (I believe this has been updated to introducer - not breeder).

The one from Sand Hill is yellow, ripening orange...When I grew it in a container they were smaller than a paste, and a little fatter...Meaty, with mild flavor...

Good input.

So how does one put together the three words that comprised the variety Patty wanted to know about?

Extra Eros Zlatovlaska?

Eros being brought the the US by Milan Sodomka from a Czech breeder whose name is unknown but over at GW a few years back we really tried to ID him and failed, and then Zlatovlaska which Andrey says is A Russian CV from NC seeds.

Sounds a bit of a mixed up situation with Eros being described as red allegedly from the Czech breeder and as orange from , well, you get the point.

And I guess Extra means extra.

I received my Extra Eros Zlatovlaska from Bill Minkey in 2004 and it is the same as described by Jeanne. It was very productive for me.

So this was a Czech breeder living in East Germany?
(The "Extra Eros" sounds like an eBay variety name.)

So maybe
Zlatovlaska ~Redhead (Rus.>Eng.) , Eros, and Extra Eros Zlatovlaska might be
one in the same?? Does Eros translate to Early?? Thanks for the help! Patty

How about this:

Eros is one variety (amber to orange color), an East German
variety introduced to the US by a well-known Czech breeder.

Zlatovlaska is a different variety (red) that originated in
the CIS (former USSR).

Extra Eros Zlatovlaska is something souped up with a fancy
marketing name whose relation to either Eros or Zlatovlaska
is unknown. (It will be interesting to compare the ripe fruit
with the descriptions of fruit of both Eros and Zlatovlaska.)

Someone might have crossed Eros and Zlatovlaska to create it,
but there is no guarantee of that without someone taking
credit for having done so.

I find the Extra Eros Z one listed in the SSE YEarbook by two folks. One is Glenn Drowns and the other got it from Glenn, and it's in the orange/yellow section and Glenn describes it as orange/ red and plum shaped and the other person who got it from him says globe shaped yellow fruit.

No seperate listing for Eros in the orange.yellow section.

But a listing by Andrey in that same section for Zlatovlaska, deep orange fruits, name means redhead in Russian, and from Russian CV NC seeds. The other person listing it says egg shaped yellow fruit and seeds from Vasile Spirov.

In the red section:

Eros is listed by Glenn Drowns, small globe shaped red, from Abundant Life and the other person got it from Glenn and also says round red.

No listing in the red section for EEZ or separate listing for Z.

Note that Milan Sodomka brought the varieties to the US that were bred by the Czech breeder and they were first listed by Abundant Life many years ago. D, I'm glad you had that catalog to confirm that but Sodomka was not German. And I know that b'c my departed friend Kees Sahin, of Sahin Seeds in the Netherlands was from Czechoslovakia and knew Sodomka and also had all the varieties that were bred by the Czech breeder whose name he never knew.

Putting it together it looks like Eros was bred in the Czech Republic and is red.

Zlatovlaska is from the CIS and is orange/yellow.

How Eros, a red, got associated with Zlatovlaska, an orange/yellow, is anyones guess.

Have you considered the possibility that Milan Sodomka
(the Czech breeder) or someone else familiar with tomatoes
grown in Eastern Europe actually told someone at Abundant Life
that Eros was an East German cultivar and that is why they have
it listed that way in their 1991 catalog?

Anyway, revised:

Eros is a red cultivar from East Germany originally introduced
to the US by the Czech breeder Milan Sodomka (we have no
earlier information as to its origin than what is in the 1991
Abundant Life catalog).

Zlatovlaska is an orange cultivar from a Russian cultivar vendor.

Extra Eros Zlatovlaska is a yellow-orange cultivar of unknown
origin.

Fact is that Milan Sodomka wasn't the Czech breeder and he wasn't from Germany.

How I wish I'd kept all my old seed catalogs for Abundant Life and Seeds Blum and Gleckler's, but I didn't.

No, nothing specific to look up Neil, I was just lamenting the fact that I wished I HAD kept them.

I especially loved the Seeds Blum catalogs with all those wonderful black and while line drawings.

But Jan never could adapt to computerization and when it got to the point that folks were getting their seeds very late, and I don't mean in weeks, but more like months, and some for a year, she just couldn't continue, especially since she never got back to folks about their delayed seeds after a few half hearted attempts. Sad.
