Default German Johnson

I've grown German Johnson from Bonnie's transplants about 3 times with very little success. I saved seeds in 2015 from one of my few ripe GJs and have gotten this container beauty...

I know Bonnie's can be sketchy when it comes to heirlooms. Does this look like a reasonably true German Johnson to the pros here?

John- those are beautiful plants. I'm growing the RL version, the Benton strain, from seeds I obtained from Marsha (who I think got them from Camochef). I know there are both RL and PL out there. When you get some ripe fruit, let's compare pictures and see if they are similar. I have about 6 little greenies on my plant right now, behind you a week or so.

Thanks and will do. I'm thinking I may see some color by next week.

You were close, I got them from Dana(Dana's Dusky Rose), she grew them out, her original seeds came from Mike, aka Camochef.
Are yours healthy?

Yep, so far. But this guy was started later than the others (just a tiny runt on 4/2/17 plantout), and it is flowering like crazy. The crazy plant next to it has 35 tomatoes weighing it down- I cut all growth stems and just praying for no wind...

Moshou,

Not sure of the capacity in terms of volume, but this is the planter and I have it about 60% full...

I grow the PL version of GJ and love it; but it is a bit stingy when compared to some of my other favorites. I tried a regular leaf version once but the seed from a reputable
commercial seed seller turned out to be small cherries so I haven't tried the regular leaf version since.

Marsha, have you grown both versions and is the Benton strain better than the PL?

Bill

Yes I have grown both, and in my garden the Benton does better as far as fruit set and as far as more disease resistance. I have not grown them side by side. Bill, I have seeds if you want some. Just pm me.

This year I planted both German Johnson RL and the Benton strain. I do not see much difference. We had a storm late May with 80 - 90 MPH straight line winds and 2 inches of rain in 1 hour. Tomato jungle....... through all that I still made lots of tomatoes, but lost a lot.

Please read this link from here at Tville last year

http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=43427

And note the link within it.

I had already saved Dana's page with a picture and description of the Benton one but couldn't find it in my faves..

My point is,unless someone grows the GJ RL one and the GJ PL one and the Benton one in the sames eason,I think it would be very difficult, yea impossible,to make any conclusions.

And yes,the Benton one will be in the next seed offer, whenever that is,seeds from Nancy Ruhl, who got it directly from Camo. I decided to do that since Camo said he was no longer sending out seeds, and with few exceptions, Dana offers only plants, not seeds. And since I can spread those seeds around to the several commercial vendors I know well, for trial, I thought that might help,as did Nancy as I recall.
