Hi Marc! I live in North Las Vegas. I have tomato seedlings growing indoors and I started placing them outside about three weeks ago, just after the appearance of the first true leaves. Only on warm and non-windy days. Now they're outside all day and I bring them back indoors in the early evening and put them under the lights. The majority of my seedlings are in soil blocks and are exposed to the elements ~ as long as I keep them moist they do just fine outside. Setting them out early like this seems to work very well here. I've had success with this in the past.

I'll be planting some of them out this weekend (especially the late varieties) and protecting them from wind and cold at night using a frost blanket. I will be planting out only 12 of my 86 tomato seedlings. Sounds like a lot, but some of the seedlings are rootstock that will be used for grafting. I'm sure I'll have a few leftover if you're interested. Haven't even planted these guys yet, and I'm already planning the varieties I want to plant next year. LOL.

Awesome set up there. Well maybe I can get a little more aggressive with a few of mine now that I know someone might have a couple extras laying around!

Now I'm excited for the sun to come up tomorrow!

What do you use for a frost blanket? Any pics of that?

I use a Dewitt .5 ounce frost blanket (equivalent to Agribon AG-19) over EMT hoops placed within my raised bed. I will probably double up on the frost blanket at night until it warms up more.

Our spring winds will be here soon so I will need to protect the seedlings and my frost blanket (the wind has a tendency to tear up the frost blanket). Clear plastic sheeting comes in handy for this.

I'll upload some photos tomorrow ~ I need to take em first.

As promised, here's a photo of my frost blanket/EMT hoop setup.

When I took this photo, one side was open. The bed on the left is my "ready-to-go" tomato bed. I also included a photo of my tomato seedlings outside today ~ I grab everything and anything I can set them on so it's nothing fancy.

And here's a close-up photo of one of my tomato seedlings in a soil block.

While the tops are small, the roots might be developing well. When you plant them out, the bigger root ball and smaller leaves is better than the reverse. Note the size of the root ball when you plant them out. I keep mine cold and small for 6 weeks, and they do great once planted out.

After a few days of some sun and a little wind they are looking good.

Can't wait to eat some of my own tomatoes.

The 6 closest are Paul Robeson. The farther ones are all those Queen of Hearts hybrids.
