Default asparagus in containers..

since I don't have much grounds for planting, most of my crops are container grown...

I just started growing asparagus 6 mos ago in a soft pot and just transferred it on a rectangular pot.

I know it will take a couple of years before i can pick my first harvest... Just want to ask if anybody has grown them on containers before and was it successful?

"The perennial root system of asparagus becomes quite extensive and, after a few years, can penetrate the soil to a depth of 4 feet or more."

Excerpt taken from:

I would figure the container asparagus you are growing would be stunted and root bound. If you grew it in a plastic 55 gal barrel, it probably would do OK.

thanks dustdevil. I never knew that the root systems will go deep at 4ft. I'll just transfer it on the ground when the roots are ready again. 55 G plastic drums = lots of dirt needed.

Dust devil is right. The whole root system of adult asparagus is just too big to be contained.

Asparagus can be 'containerized'...except if it isn't in something very large, it will never get very big, itself. Asparagus officianalis (the edible one) will resemble its cousins when grown in too small of a container (the ornamental ones...A. densiflorus and A. plumosus...the two most popular/common ornamentals).

Seedling asaparagus will hold for at least a year in pots. Use this time to make a box (for a raised bed) you can fill it with compostables as your asparagus loafs in its seedling pan.
