Sometimes a better deal than orange.....

By the fall the bucket is a solid root bound plug that comes out in one big piece. The plugs get composted. Buying new ProMix each spring is expensive, but worth it. If I bought as many good peppers and tomatoes that came from those buckets it would cost more, not to mention the joy of growing them.

Menard's is a Midwest home improvement store. Some things are Menard's are fine, while others are of questionable quality.

Thanks! I know a lot of people are having tough tomato years, so far my year has been very healthy and getting great growth and fruit set. I hope it keeps up.

We usually get our first ripe tomato right around July 4 +/- a few days. After the cold second half of May I figured we'd be a bit later than normal. We had a couple days of vacation before the 4th and wasn't sure if anything would be ready when we got home--nothing yet, not even a blushing tomato yet, so things will be much later than usual. Looks like it will be a race between Sungold and Silvery Fir Tree, possibly a Teensy dwarf that will start blushing in the coming days. Things are very lush and just a hint of some foliage issues which I'm attacking aggressively, lots of fruit set and loads of flowers.

Snapped a couple photos while out in the garden today. Starting to get some fungal issues that I will be attacking more tonight.

Top, upper left. Noire de Crimee, at least is supposed to be, the shape looks off--any thoughts?

Top, upper right. Daniel Burson, loading up on tomatoes!

Top, lower left. Orange Jazz. The first truss only set 1 fruit as it was very cold around that time, and that tomato is getting huge. More smaller fruits are just starting.

Top, lower right. Mat-Su Express, a very healthy plant is that loading up and continues to flower like mad.

Bottom, left. Silvery Fir Tree--loads of tomatoes!

Bottom, right. Craig's Carolina Amethyst pepper, lots of peppers and very beautiful.

Thanks Worth! Yes that's OJ. It is a big tomato already, at least baseball sized. But like I said I had issues with fruit set on first trusses on some varieties this year, hence only 1 fruit until recent small ones.

Garlic 2017 was a big success! 36 heads of Chesnok Red. Wanted them out before we get rain overnight.

Thanks! The blushing has commenced here! No surprise Sungold. Also a surprise tomato making it a race, one of the mutliflora micro dwarfs has a blushing fruit tucked deep inside the plant. Neck and neck down the stretch....

Houston, we've got color! First tomato of the year will be eaten tomorrow. Tie between Sungold and a cherry microdwarf (left side).
