2009 - My Way

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.

· I’ve pulled all my plants, tilled the garden, added compost to the raised beds
· I have a mountain of ripening tomatoes on my kitchen counter

Regrets, I’ve had a few;

· Planted Black Cherry in a pot that kept tipping over in the wind...took a licking and kept on ticking, though.
· My trellis didn’t work and my tomatoes were a big sprawling mess by the end of the year.
· My wife thinks I’ve gone mad. Ah, but who really cares about that...

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.

· Did I mention, I’ve driven my wife crazy...18 full sized indeterminates in my back yard.
· Planning for more next year... don’t tell her... hehehe

But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.

· Nicolayev Yellow Cherry, what a spitter...a heartfelt sorry to those I traded it to...

And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

· I must admit I am hooked. Loved it all from the beginning to the end.
· Already planning for next year.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows –
And did it my way!

· Hope everyone had a great 2009 and wishing you all a better 2010!!!

It was a very good year...

Just kidding. Weather was cool. We had very little rain here in MN. However, I did get a lot of tomatoes. Flavor wasn't as great as last year due to cool conditions, I think. This was only my second year, so I don't have a lot to compare to. No disease to speak of...knock on wood.

Great to hear Pat I know the cool weather and my choice of potting mix may have affected tomato size and flavor but over all it was an ok year I had plenty of tomatoes to eat and give away and cannot complain about that with all the late blight issues out east. I have yet to cut down all my plants and empty pots hopefully I have time before this weekend since it is supposed to snow.

Weather was cool. We had very little rain here in MN.

Humph! Sounds like a quote from the TV weathermen who think Minnesota ends at Brainerd! We northerners always get short shrift.


Ummm .... yes, to the weather being cool, but here in the north of the state we did get a fair amount of rain. I wouldn't go so far as to say too much, it was probably just right as far as rainfall, but we had so many cloudy days that even when it didn't rain, it was poor growing conditions.

I'd say my season ended up just a little bit under average. That last 6 weeks of hot summer starting in mid-August did wonders for ripening the big fellas. I even got some Yellow Brandywines that I was not hopeful for. Also, the early tomatoes did not taste very good, so it was a pleasant surprise when the mid-September picks were much better. Normally that time of year they've lost flavor. Weird summer up here.

D my parents are in the Brainerd area as well close to the dam on Gull Lake and yes you did get allot more rain then we did here. Sungolds did well for them and the Big Beef they had had tons of nice fruit on it (more then mine) however when I was visiting a few weeks ago they got a visit from a nice neer that ate quite a bit of the plants and knocked 15+ fruit of close to a pound off the big beef plants. They are requesting a return of the big beef due to the numbers of fruit they had.

Yes, the deer have now gone into their fall feeding frenzy, they go over my electric fence which they respect all summer long. Happens every year. Yesterday there were six of them, including a little forkhorn buck, and this years twins out in the middle of the day. First thing they head for is the green beans, then the pepper tops, then any red or green tomatoes. I don't get mad anymore, I figure they are saving me garden clean up of vines that will die in the next frost and they even leave a little fertilizer! I am somewhat east of Bemidji. I grew up in Minneapolis and at that time also thought it was somewhere near the arctic circle.

Due to the fact that today it just stopped raining, and I no longer have acres to plant, I have decided to stock the tomato fields with trout!
We are going to have more rain into next week, and anyone who is a member here is welcome to come and ice fish next Week, because then it will be winter!! Now you all know why I am the icelord!!
