Thanks Svalli
I love these bio dome things from Parks. Everything I sow in them just thrives. I am going to break down and buy about 4 more and just be done with it. Every year I plant my peppers or tomatoes or whatever and then I just panic..waiting to see if they'll germinate. This year, I had problems finding the soiless mix I like to use, so I had to sub with another one. It's awful and now I'm just checking my tomatoes 20 times a day to see if it's wet enough, or dry enough, etc. With these, they will germinate if the seed is viable. Easy to water, easy to clean up. You do have to buy the sponge thingies every year, but they're not that expensive to have peace of mind. So I'm ordering enough to do everything and stop playing around with the rest of it.

Germination
All seeds planted 2/21/09 in Jiffy peat pellets, no bottom heat, no lights and kept outdoors as much as possible. These seeds also took a 1000 mile road trip as I had no one to care for them, status as of 3/16:
Hot Pepper #1 vial 08-51, 12 seeds, 66% germination, 25% green cotyledons, 75% purple, no true leaves Hot Pepper #14 vial 08-65, 12 seeds, 66% germination, 25% green cotyledons, 75% purple, no true leaves. Hot Pepper #38 vial 08-90, 12 seeds, 75% germination, 100% purple cotyledons, no true leaves. |

I am getting a better idea on the cot and true leaf color variation on all of my types - very few are uniform looking throughout the 10 or so seedlings (which is predictable) - I can see planting 2-3 each from each of my 30 or so types. Going to be fun!
Pics to follow - just got a new camera (my last one took a bath while Kayaking, which is not recommended)

Craig they do make waterproof digital cameras. I have a Cannon Power Shot SD1000 that I can purchase a seperate waterproof case that I can use when I decide to learn to Snorkle. There was a gentleman and his wife on our last Whitewater rafting trip that had a waterproof/fall from 6ft? I think anyway. They both felll out of the raft on a class five rapid hitting rocks and being generally beat up by everything. When my husband was able to pull him back on the raft and his wife was safe he took a few pics and the camera took all that and was still working. He informed everyone that he had not intended to check out the claims in that manner

I just did a cot and true leaf color check on these various experimental hot peppers. Here is what I am seeing (this is out of about 10 seedlings of each):
Pepper 1: at least two types - varying shades of purple - I will grow out 2 or 3 Pepper 5: at least two types, though all are now showing some purple - I will grow out 2 or 3 Pepper 6: I am seeing mostly green, a few purplish - so will grow out 2. Pepper 7: Mostly green, 1 purplish - so will grow out 2. Pepper 8: Large cots, mostly green, but 1 purplish - will grow out 2. Pepper 9: looks like three types, so will grow out 3. Pepper 10: mostly green, a few purplish - will grow out 2. Pepper 11: mostly green, one purplish - will grow out 2. Pepper 13a: most are purple, a few more pale - will grow out 2. Pepper 14: three distinct types - varying purple - so will grow out 3. Pepper 22: came out uniformly green - will grow out 1. Pepper 29: came out uniformly green - will grow 1. Pepper 37: looks like two types, will grow out 2. Pepper 38: two types, varying purple shades, will grow out 2. Pepper 43: mostly green, a few purplish, will grow out 2. Pepper 47: look uniformly purple - will grow out 1. How are things looking for you, pepper volunteers?

I have delayed reporting because I am waiting for better news. My pepper starting has proved dismal this year. The first batch ended up with damp off and, for the second batch, I'm getting low germination rates. My problem is not with your seed, I have the same trouble with all 16 varieties I'm starting. It seems the ones I want to come up the most are giving me the most trouble.
I have 1 nice #13a with beautiful deep purple cotyledons. I believe some more will pop up ... still waiting ... will update again. - Bitwise |

Update: Slightly unusual cotyledons with #43. The cotyledons on #43 are elongated and at first it didn't seem like the true leaves were going to emerge from the center (refer to the plant in the middle of the first picture). The second picture compares #43 and #37 and shows the difference.

I culled the peppers today. I will take pics tomorrow so you can see what's going on. They are really starting to take off this week.

I started my hot peppers on March 15th. They were on a heat pad for the first 5 days, but I had to leave town for a week, so decided they would be better off at room temp of 70 til I got back, rather than run a risk of cooking and/or drying up on an unattended heat mat. #1 and #38 have good, mostly even germination, cots have definite color variations. #5 is slow, and has just now broken out a few tiny cots, I expect there should be more coming.
It's been 12 days since sowing and results so far are: #1 (14 seeds) 11 up, 3 purple, 8 green #5 (15 seeds) 4 up, slower to sprout and very tiny, all look green so far ... #38 (10 seeds) 10 up, 7 purple, 2 green, one late with a seed head still on, but stem looks purple. Will post pics when #5 has a little more sprouting time so I can do all in one post. |

Photo update on peppers.
Saved 3 peppers from #1. Here are shots of 2 of them, the 3rd one is solid green with the same sized leaves as these. Pepper $8 is solid green with large leaves. Like a bell pepper. Saved 1 plant. Gave the other 5 to a friend who will watch for any unusual peppers. Pepper #47. Looks like a typical decorative pepper to me. Gorgeous leaves. I saved 5 of these. That's all I got here

Barbee your plants look great!! Mine are little compared to yours. I am posting pics. I have plants from plant 7, 10, 14 and 22. I will put pics in that order. First plants are in the total group then seperated. Most look like other pics. Plant 14 has more variability. I plan on planting out all these peppers into my flower beds this weekend. Will have to get family to protect against any frost that comes in next week. Stupid weather

Kat, yours will catch up soon enough. I'm sure your heat is ideal for growing these babies. We don't get the hot hot weather usually until about July. Mine are still inside and just think it's hot
