Default Tomato Variety Compendium

A Compendium of Tomato Varieties by Company is an attempt to provide a concise yet comprehensive compilation of a body of tomato names/varieties carried by as many companies as humanly possible.

I started with a few companies to ascertain if this would be a big list. Sufficed as this first post indicates, it is a huge compilation. If you wish to add to this on-going listing, please feel free to do so. Try to be as accurate as possible and keep it brief; company followed by variety. Don't add any description as that would make it cumbersome to read. I will add to this list as time avails. I am interested in non-heirloom type tomatoes, because this forum rarely covers commercial branded tomatoes.

Thanks, Tom Wagner

Tom, you can add a very important one to Known-You and that's Santa F1.

And it might be a good idea to comment that several of the places you mentioned are wholesale only, so that folks here don't get the impression that they can get seeds directly from them retail, or for that matter wholesale either.

And a very warm welcome to your Moderator status for this Forum, now in addition to your Moderator status for the Potato Forum. Seldom would any site have someone with your background to Moderate and contribute to both subjects.

Now it's about Verde Claro........ OK, I promise, well almost , to keep my mouth ( read fingers silent) shut about this one and many of your other varieties.

Carolyn,

Thanks for posting here. In terms of Santa F-1, my guess is that Procacci Brothers has sufficient control of that variety as to make it (de facto) not listed in the KnownYou.com website. Because of the publicity of Santa F-1 on tomato forums, it has been KnownToMe and KnownToYou of the origins. ('')

If one visits either of the sites below it will illustrate that omission:

http://www.knownyou.com/en_index.jsp...7&type=product

www.knownyou.com

The only hint to Santa is: Juliet, this larger sister variety of Santa.

Back to my opinions. There are many tomato varieties emerging in the attempt to have Santa types.

Santasian (E 20.32683) is but one example

A so-called 'Santa'-type for production in heated greenhouse. Sweet, chrunchy fruit.

I like how the name Santasian alludes to Santa and Fantasian.

Finding tomato varieties listed or unlisted is a game of sorts for me. I don't care if they are next to impossible to access as seed, just knowing what is out there is "Manna" to me. I always have liked to play around with F-2 seed of obscure varieties. The legality of obtaining some of these proprietary hybrids and saving seed is of increasing negation. I have chosen not to go into a lot of detail per variety. That should go to other sub forums perhaps.

I did some research on how varieties of tomatoes become listed. Europe has adopted new regulations in the last few years. Example:

Quote:
(2004/842/EC). THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES
This is concerning implementing rules whereby Member States may authorize the placing on the market of
seed belonging to varieties for which an application for entry in their national catalog of varieties of tomatoes and agricultural plant species or vegetable species has been submitted.

Sometimes you have to find lists of tomatoes that are not well published. I am including such of list of tomatoes that may have some interest in the future.

Authorizations on the marketing of varieties
Not yet officially listed according to Decision 2004/842/EC.

The varieties have data (in part) regarding:
Variety denom.
National ID
Maintainer
Breeder's reference

More on other sites about Verde Claro.('')

*****

More than I already know in addition to my thinking it's one of the best varieties I've ever grown?

If you've had more to say about it, referring me other sites doesn't do it for me Tom, b'c I don't get around much anymore, to borrow some words from a song I once knew ALL the lyrics to.

So a link or whatever would help me, yes it would.

Tom
Does this mean we are going to see a clear skinned claro verde soon?

By the way I laughed a little the way Carolyn slid into the topic
For a tomato she has wanted for some time now - Tom is it about time yet

Dennis, please note that all of the posts in this thread are from 2007 except the last two and you can find the thread Tom referred to, possibly, by searching here where he did do a thread about Verde Claro, in great detail and said no, he wasn't going to make it available to the public for the reasons he gave.

The end result is that Tom has not formally released any of his varieties to the public since the mid-80's as far as I can remember.

Yes, I've grown Verde Claro, but we now have Green Doctors Frosted, a clear epidermis green when ripe that I'm distributing seeds for in my seed offer thanks to Jeff Casey whose link to his webiste I posted with my seed offer, as well as Neil Lockhart who is listing them in the 2010 SSE YEarbook for the seeds they provided me with to be able to offer.

Since I have tasted Green Doctors and like it very very much growing Green Doctors Frosted won't be a surprise for me since I already know what Verde Claro looks like.

sorry missed the date - and yes read about Green Doctors Frosted in your seed offer - guess I will have to try some of those someday soon- only small green I have tried is green grape and not impressed - no more room for a cherry or grape for this season
Thanks
Dennis
