Hi zipcode,

the place is called www.exotic-seeds.de
Careful, I just called it up and it seems to be now loaded with nasty adware or such.

With all the talk about Merinda/Marinda/Mirinda being a hybrid, I didn't want to chance it with seeds from a commercial fruit.

This year's result looked like the real thing, complete with the pointy tip, but maybe German summer and growing conditions in a pot did not lead to the desired taste. Or the commercial is a hybrid after all. If anyone has definite knowledge about the Merinda-Marinda-Mirinda conundrum, please speak up.

The only thing I know is that the great stuff is grown in Sicily in winter and sold from March to June or so. Plus there is the usual talk of salt water which I take with a grain of said stuff.

When sold in Italy in spring these tomatoes usually don't carry a name and vendors call it Costoluto, which doesn't tell you anything as it means "ribbed"... I just check the look and maybe if the box says "Sicily" somewhere.

I have researched this a lot, but obviously to no avail so far.

Best, Barbara

Edited to add: I just realized that you probably wanted to know the source of the tomatoes, not the seeds. Here you go:
https://www.erlesene-kartoffeln.de/p...a-tomaten/1577
And as you see, these are called Marinda, just to confuse everyone.

I mean, where do you buy the actual tomatoes, not the seeds . Are they available in any of the usual stores, like real, tegut?
The site is .eu it seems.
Merinda is probably just a brand name, what variety is behind is really hard to say, will try to look at the usual hybrid makers to see if they have something similar.

Hi zipcode,

the Merinda tomatoes are sometimes sold in high-end groceries (Karstadt Perfetto, Dallmayr in Munich) and at outrageous prices. Once (and only once) even my local (Turkish) weekly market vendor had them and sold them as "green tomatoes". I've never seen them in the more pedestrian shops.

Buying online is the best bet for me - especially as I'm really craving good tomatoes in springtime.

Default Spadaro

So while we're discussing the origin of Merinda, let's have a look at the rest of the balcony: Spadaro, which is alledgedly also Italian.

Tall plant grown in a 20l-pot on two stems (the whole thing is a jungle by now as I stopped pruning eventually)
Huge, and I mean huge, beautiful hearts, but not a lot of them
good taste, but no wow-factor except for the looks
seed source: Hahm-Hartmann

Best, Baba

Default Vinson Watts

I had high expectations in this one. First it didn't want to germinate. Then I dropped a tray with seedlings and the resulting mix-up of labels gave me two Vinson Watts in the end. Alas, I got a single wonderful tomato (and some very small greenies which will probably not make it) on the first plant and I'm waiting for a couple of fruits on the second plant. All that by the end of August.

normal tall plants grown in 10l-pots
late, late, late
very stingy on my balcony - maybe it's just not suited for containers
very good taste: maybe all the tomato power went into that single fruit
Sorry, Mr Vinson Watts - we won't be friends

Best, Baba

Default Rebel Yell

So here's to the last variety of this year's bounty - Rebel Yell.

I broke off one of the two main stems accidentally in May and cursed myself because it was loaded with flowers. Now while this may be a reason for not getting fifty tomatos, it is no reason for ripening the first of about 3 fruits at the end of August...

But the taste! I like this so much that I may try it again next year...

Normal high plant grown in 10l pot
Late and low production for me
Good size and taste
Seed source: Charline in France
May try again in bigger pot

That's it for this year, I'm afraid. There's less and less sun on my balcony every day and I can just hope to get the rest of the greenies ripe - plants are about to give up. It's been fun and plans for next year are under way...

Best, Baba

A beautiful show, Barbara! I too wish you the best of growing success next year and will be interested to see whether using larger containers gives you more or earlier production. Thank you so much for sharing your tomatoes with us!

Baba thanks again for your wonderful reviews. I do hope that you will try Rebel Yell sometime. It is a bit on the late side, but it was very tasty and productive for me in ground. Perhaps a larger pot will give you a better result.

Thanks for sharing pics. It's interesting to see tomatoes that we don't have in my locale.

Default Cross sections

Hi Oakley,

most of them got eaten! And I don't know if I can get the few leftover tomatoes to ripen - it's raining all day here, every day. I'll try to add pics of cross-sections of the rest... different fruit, different lighting, different post....

Here's to Lithium Sunset and Coeur de Boeuf Sweetheart:
