It always amazed me how often people pay good money for the EB and then fail to follow directions because they think they know better. Although in this case it sounds like the nursery worker bears most of the blame. If I were attempting to salvage what is remaining I would remove the cover and top water including liquid ferts. The growing medium is likely too heavy for any containter growing but I would not add poor wicking to the already bad odds.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Yes, I told him to top water from now on also. He has 2 ripe ones now and is super excited. Lesson learned: listen to me!
