I've had the worst seed starting ever. Thankful for the nice weather. 85 today and a bit
windy, some sun...shady side of home.
Everything outside. All plants, all trays, all 20 trays. Cleaning and bleaching the seed
starting room.
Fungus gnats and aphids. Even just catching one or two on new yellow sticky traps the
pepper plants needed checking morning and night. Bas*#rds.

The three trays of transplants potted up looked horrid last week, (right pic)...my 54
prime babies but seem better today.

I do have the cell trays of back-ups. Just ran out of room.

10 day forecast is 75high/48-55low.

Yeah, I got names for critters here also although not funny- rabbits plus the insects and fungi - got names for them also. Your plants on the right look good to plant out ?- but when is your plant out date in NY. Here in zone 6a Central Indiana looks like around the 20th but i plan to look at the long range forecast on the 10th and hope i see no frost on the horizon and i'll plant - the ground is ready as well as the plants. Kind of holding them back right now and hope i can get them in the ground while they are still healthy?? Just praying for the best here in Indy, spent 1rst 6 yrs. of life in Lake Katona/Goldens Bridge NY

Right you are. A comment on dimensions :

At the bottom of the pot I punch a hole wide enough so that I can push out the seedling with a finger to put it in a bigger pot. Some plastics can't be punched, they split. You can burn a hole with a piece of red-hot iron.
Where to pour the water ? As I can weld I made big trays 2'' high with sheet iron (stainless or galvanized). The pictures on that thread show a different solution with plastic covering a metal or wooden frame.
An important point : your tray must be perfectly horizontal so that your seedlings receive the same quantity of water.

When to add water ? I suggest when there is nothing left in the tray you can wait till the surface of the pot is slightly dry.
You can add fertilizer to the water (once a week ?) but only a third of the recommended dose for adult plants.

Beautiful high tunnel pics, clkeiper.

Oh and that bin in my pic is 4' x 8.' If will hold about 14 1020 flats. It's 2x12 boards with a pond liner in it. I put down sand under the pond liner.

What a difference a week makes! Gave them some heavily diluted fertilizer and have been hardening off. Think I need to wait another week or two before planting out. Wondering whether I should fill the containers to the top with potting mix in the meantime.

Nice plants! Was wondering if you are Zone 6a or 6b? Does it matter - I was trying to narrow down my plant out date.
Thanks

Northern NJ. USDA site says 7a If I zoom in on the USDA map, my house is 7a but a half mile west in the same town/zip is 6b. Worth noting that this is my first attempt at gardening and timing a plant out so I don't recommend following my lead!

Ha throwaway! can't trust myself either i have been a home gardener for 50+ years and every year i have had to scramble and cover up because of frost! I may try a few out around the 10th here just west of Indianapolis 6a or 6b but from my studies(am able to research more now retired) seems as if the ground is cold they ain't gonna grow much anyway - that's what i hear but i will chance a few plants anyway

My forecast has an overnight low of 40 on May 8, so I think I'll follow your lead and plant out a sacrificial extra when that cold snap passes.
