Tomatoes in Africa?
I would like to know if it is possible to grow tomatoes in Africa, precisely in Senegal .
I would like to give seeds to a family there . Some varieties that did well in this summer's extreme heat. Who has experience with Africa? Thanks for responding... |

Here's a description of Senegal's climate from wiki.
Climate. Tropical; hot, humid; rainy season (May to November) has strong southeast winds; dry season (December to April) dominated by hot, dry, harmattan wind. Well-defined dry and humid seasons result from northeast winter winds and southwest summer winds. Africa is so huge that the climates vary dramatically. I sent pepper seeds to a guy in Zimbabwe who had great success, but Zimbabwe is a very long way from Senegal. |

Thank you Charley.
That means they could try to grow tomatoes in the winter ? When it is dry is better than humid. |

I goggled because I was curious and it seems they can grow tomatoes. There's been interest in teaching growing methods from companies and organizations. Take a look at these results.

As well as these paste tomatoes, cherry tomatoes are also a popular crop |

I have "African Vining" in the garden this year. But, I can't be certain about its origins.

This brings up a thought I've been wondering about. Is there any organization that wants donations of tomato seeds? I'd be happy to do a bulk seed-save and pass it along to someone in an impoverished area, or give to a group that distributes seeds to those who need them.

That's a nice offer, nan , but I dont know. I just give the seeds to a friend who has a house in Senegal and knows some people there. We will see how they like it. If there is more demand for seeds I will provide more.
I can ask him to find out about an organisation. |
